One of my first night shots, what could I have done to make it better

Did, you use a tripod ? It looks a little blurry. :]

No tripod, all I had with me was a mono pod.

The lighting is very uneven. IF ... you used a tripod and re-did the image, try this. Open up the lens and leave it open if you can. Use an external flash NOT connected to the camera. Walk around a "pop" the flash from all sides. That way you can evenly light the entire statue.

Night shots always look a bit better with a little bit of colour in the sky, which you get if you shoot around half an hour after sunset. Check out the examples in this thread: Night shots.
