Comments and Critique Please. I upgraded from a g3 earlier this year. This was my first attempt at night photography using my xt and I have mixed feelings about the results.

Hi azpix,

The first shot has decent composition with nice lines from the bridge in the top left corner leading into the shot, and the tree on the right providing anchoring and framing.
However it is too too too soft. Did you use a tripod?
Night photography absolutely requires you to keep the camera and lens as stable as possible.
The second one doesn't do much for me compositionally but it has nice reflections.

Yep I'd agree with Adam's comments....the first shot would have been great if it had been sharp....a good start though..

I did use a tripod. I think the head was real loose though which may of been part of the issue.

The wreath does look a bit odd in the first one but I love the light and composition.

keep that head tight!!

Also, for my night shots I always enable mirror lockup (under Custom Functions in your menu).
Ideally you should use a cable release as well, but if not, put the camera on timer-mode. When used in conjunction with mirror-lockup, it gives a 2 second timer rather than standard 10 seconds, which should be about enough time for vibrations to settle after the mirror has slapped up.
If you do use a mirror lockup, make sure you also wait a few seconds between opening the mirror and the shutter.
