I can't decide which of these I prefer. I don't like the halo around the sun, any ideas how to avoid it in future (I wasn't using a filter).

Next piece of land in that direction is the US or Canada.

Number 2 for me as well. The contrast in the light and dark is sweet

If No:3 was tweaked a little in Photoshop for more contrast the because it has a full band of sun rays I reckon that would be the best :)

All of these, to me, have too much contrast. With the sun that far above the horizon, you should have at least some reflection off the ocean surface and some waves showing. These look like you cropped them to eliminate vignetting in the corners, but you should have decreased the contrast to eliminate vignette. I realize that more contrast means more color in your sunset, but the cost is too great here. Hope this helps. Just MYHO, of course.
