what lens did you use? Those are great.

I shot it with the kit 18-55 lens, wide open. thanks for the comment!

excellent. I really like them both. I think the 1st without the stars is better though,as said above. Care to share shutter speed f stop etc???

sure, here are the details:
18mm, f5/6, 123 seconds, 100 ISO

These are nice photos, and the long exposure has resulted in a very nice water effect. They would all look even better if the horizon was straight though. ;)

haha, I was waiting for this comment. I agree it would look better if the horizon was straight. Unfortunately I couldn't even see the horizon in the dark so I had to try to blindly judge it.

Good shots, good composition and well controlled whites, although your contrast line (trees/sky) has suffered under conpression

Do you mean the bit of noise in the sky or the faint haloing at the tree line?
Thanks for the compliments!

Very nice shots Doug. The first has to be my favorite-with the stars.
Where did you shoot these?
Had a look at your site, very ncie shots there as well.

Thanks Frank!
I shot these at Middle Cove, one of my favorite places to shoot at night. It looks really remarkable under a full moon. If you can you should check it out sone night. Just watch out for the cows, lol. There were a couple of them grazing right behind me as I was taking these.

Doug, can you post links to larger versions? These look wonderful, but I think viewing them as larger images would really do them justice. Also, I have a suggestion for the stars...you could always make your own, or copy and past sharper ones in from another image. I think stars WOULD add something to the sky, but since these are blurry, they detract from the image.

I don't have any larger versions on this computer unfortunately. I can try to get some later when my finishes up (she uses our desktop for work). hmm, your suggestion on the stars is something to think about, thanks for that one.

They are both beautiful shots.

I would probably prefer the second one if the horizon were straight also there is a small piece of land in the upper right that I would clone out.

That's the beauty of digital though as it is easy to correct this during processing. From a get it right at the beginning perspective, you can get a little spirit level that fits on your hotshoe, and then use that to level the camera. The photo is from B&H (external link) although to be honest, you can buy them for far cheaper than that.

To be honest, if his exposure was more than a minute (gotta be in full-moon light), and there was a hint of wind, those trees will look soft anyway.

I agree the horizon's off, but this is great stuff under difficult conditions.

Get that spirit level John mentioned and go there to do it again!
Nice work.

You also could have simply cropped out the sky containing the stars.

I really like the landscape shot Doug, No 2, and I wouldn't straighten the horizon........ We live on a round world and I can't see the problem with portraying it, as it's seen! :)

Very nice Doug,

I like the version without the stars, it draws the eye to that fabulous smokey effect on the rocks. At first glance I said... "what the heck is that"? The shot is very very interesting and a successful experiment on your part.

... level the horizon will ya.. I almost fell of my chair tilting my heid.

Cousin... who is not always on the level himself.
