So...
I've been planning back and forth like a madman what lenses to get. I'll be getting the 400D 1.6 crop camera.
I think what I'll need will be:

Wide angle
(Tokina AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X Pro DX?)

General purpose

(Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD?)

Tele Zoom
(Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM?/Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM?)

Macro
(Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro?/Tokina AT-X 100mm f/2.8 PRO D Macro?/Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro?
)

Since I don't have all the money needed ATM, I'll have to get them one at a time, starting with the general lens now, then getting the macro, tele and wide-angle lenses around March-April.

That's why I now ask you to vote for the lenses you think will fit my needs best.

What I'd like to see in a lens:
-Good, sharp, contrasty image quality w/o distortions/CA's etc.
-Good build quality, but doesn't have to be Uber-L kind.
-Decent autofocus (except the macro lens), noise doesn't matter and speed not THAT much either.
-(Insert what I've forgotten here)

Thanks for all your precious advice!

Can a moderator please remove the Sigma 80-400mm from the poll, it isn't meant to be there and slipped through accidentally! (Too pricey...):oops:

WA = 17-40L
Tele = 70-200L
Macro = 100mm Macro

The canon offerings in these focal lengths are reasonably priced and among the very best IQ you can get.

I have the Tamron 28-75 lens... I love it...but I miss the wide end (17mm). I'm looking at the 17-40L or the 17-50 tamron for the WA/general purpose lens. The 17-70mm Sigma sounds promising with a nice range. Never used it myself, tho'.

The 70-200L is almost a no brainer. Fantastic lens.

I have the 60mm eF-S macro. Another great lens. It's a toss up with that one or the 100mm Macro from Canon (the extra distance for the 100mm would be useful for bugs). I wouldn't get the Sigma. Only because I like the speed of Canon's autofocus and with macro, that'll make a difference.

What he said. If you want an EF-S trifecta you could sub the 60mm Macro for the 100mm. Both are great.

Yeah,that's pretty much right.
If you're skint like me you could go for the poor man's version:
Sigma 10-20
Tamron 17-50
Canon 60mm macro

I was going to get the 60MM Macro but it was just too close to the 50MM.

Speaking of poor man's version...how do you like the "Affordable Fab Four" Primes I have assembled? 30MM, 50MM, 85MM, and 100MM...this is my response to the Holy Trinity :)

Your choices are a bit blah - of all the lenses you list, only 1 grabs the forum - the 70-200 f/4

All the others are very ordinary, I think your mistake was to try get it all in on one poll - most of the choices people have voted for are 'other'

This is a Canon forum. the 'other ' lenses are all the Canons you left off the list.

Canon 6D
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 , Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro
CanonEF 17-40 f/4 L Canon EF 24-70 f/4 IS L and 70-200 f/4 L :D
Speedlite 580EX and some bags'n pods'n stuff
