just curious as to what the typical use is for photos you take when you have a pass.

part of the reason i ask is that i wonder if it's tough to get repeat photo passes for the same act (ie, you gave photos from one show, so the band/publicist/label has what it needs, why bother doing that again)?

most of my shots (on assignment) are for web-based reviews; a couple have been for a magazine.

I voted and had to select "nothing"...They are only for personal use...However, I will post process them further, time permitting...and mat and frame them...I don't even have a portfolio...

john, i would think that the 'portfolio' option would work for you (ie, personal use). i guess i didn't mean to imply printed mattter as portfolio.

I have had some in music magazines, almost all are made available to the bands and I frequently keep some just for myself. I haven't had any in music magazines in the last couple of months but I have sold my services to bands.

I've had a lot of bands show no interest in good photos, some show interest but don't or can't pay anything and some (mostly the signed ones who do international tours) ask me to shoot them again and offer money straight up. Then again, I do shoot small local bands a lot just for the fun of it so it's not that surprising. I'm not aiming to make money out of this but I'm not complaining when I do :)

If a portfolio means a big picture book, well...I'll think about that...However, a portfolio on a personal web site is probably the way, I'm headed...Besides...I'll just ask you guys for advice...

I guess, I'll have to break out my Adobe web design software this winter, and finally create a personal web site...

Unless I have one of the photo hosting services make them available for the internet...presently, I'm with photobucket...

john, i highly recommend zenfolio for hosting...$40 a year isn't a steal, but the service and layout options are the best i've seen.

I'll be glad to check out their features...but honestly...I have no need for anything serious, now or even in the foreseeable future...

Can I vote 'all of the above, depending on show'? ;)

yes, definitely! it's a multi-option poll.

one thing i was curious about is if there's any sort of 'quid pro quo' expectation; ie, you get a pass from someone (be it the band, venue, label, etc), and then they expect something in return (photo run in a mag or as part of a concert review online, or images given to them for their use). was a bit surprised to see a lot of 'nothing' votes, but i've been in that situation myself for a few shoots.

i guess you never know when the images may come in handy, so even if there's no immediate use, there could be one down the road.

if i get a pass from the label then yes something is run on the band.. it's all a give and take. the reason i'm getting the pass is because of the site. now for example last night and other nights i have passes because of knowing someone, i don't have to run anything although sometimes i do.

What I do for exposure that are free, I donate to the venue or bands. Anything else lands on my 300GB drive.

There is one option not included - which is selling direct to the public which I also do.

Earlier this year, before I got the DSLR, I shot (for personal use only) with the Canon T50 SLR at a local venue...I submitted more than 50 photos for posting in the venue's internet radio station photo album...Most of them got in... I received several prizes for having my pictures selected im monthly drawings as well...
This week, I noticed three of those pics are now featured in a continuous slide show that the internet radio station uses during the 24/7 broadcast...

Since two are out of the 35mm film camera, and only one is from my new DSLR, I'll try to post them here in a new thread, with a link to the web radio...It's free music and has mostly no commercials other than some local or regional things...
So, yes...I submitted some photos to the venue radio station for posting, but none since September of this year...
