My wife keeps asking me for a list for Xmas... maybe you guys can help give me some ideas. The goal is under $300 per item. Photography related.

Here's my gear list.

Canon 30D
kit lens
28-135mm IS
70-200mm F4 L

One thing I mentioned was the 1.4 T-CON... but having difficulties narrowing down any other possibilities.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

:)

I recently picked up a TC-80N3 Timer remote and am loving it. Since you're in Tacoma, I'd recommend this as a mail order item. Robi's in Lakewood had it for $210 - Onecall.com was $130.

Other thoughts -- fingerless gloves. Was shooting around Pike Place Saturday night and was quite happy to have them.

I've noticed that shops you walk into charge and arm and a leg... seriously... I have 1 arm and 1 leg left!!! hee hee...

I usually always shop on the net.. but I didn't know about onecall.com. Thanks for the tips !

You could get a TC80N3 remote and a really nice Hoya Super pro multicoated cpl. Or, she could get you a nice used P2000. You could get a 430 flash to make a nice portable wireless portrait setup. How about a nice tripod system and the RS-80N3?

Tons of opportunities.

How about you keep shooting, and when you figure out what you need, you're just gonna buy it.

Save the money for now

It seems I mainly shoot landscape type stuff. Keeping in mind that I'm a complete novice and I'm trying to learn as much as possible. Essentially my story is this, I've always loved photography but could never really rationalize spending the $$ on something I've wanted to do. Well, the wife said to pick a hobby... hee hee... and here I am, doing everything I can to learn.

Anyhow, my 3 favorite shots to date are a picture of Seattle, a cabin by a lake and a sunset shot. My dogs make great models too but recently I'm really getting interested in action shots and macro shots.

Thanks again for everyone who has posted up some advice. I'm not good at the whole Christmas list thing... but if I can get an item or 2 for Xmas, I guess I won't have to buy them in the future.

There really aren't any decent lenses for action in your price range, although I've been known to use the "nifty fifty" for basketball. If you're interested in macro, you might consider a set of Kenko extension tubes. A 430EX would be another wise addition to your kit.

You have no fast lenses...how about an 85 1.8? Long-ish very fast lens. Superb quality, very sharp, and beautiful bokeh.

For action, I would stretch the budget a little and get the 85 f/1.8 as Ronald points out. I have also used my 50 f/1.4 for action in some of the cramped gyms we play in here in Iowa. Either lens is great and is also very versatile, they are good for portraits also.

Hello,

Another vote for the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM. Only $319.95 at B&H after $20 Canon rebate. A bit more if you add these B&H catalog numbers:

CAUV58 + CAET653 + CALP1014

...but you probably need some stocking stuffers as well, right?
