with the rebate going on for the 30D....the cost is not much of a difference, so go for the newer 30D. i just made the move from an XT to 30D also.

Besides specs...no difference really! The LCD is bigger on the 30D. It's those differences in the specs that make it more appealing though. I upgraded to from the 350D which was a bigger upgrade than from a 20D. I just felt like the differences in between a 20D and 30D would allow me to keep the camera longer due to more options to grow into.

Cheers,
LeBaron

I would advocate for going with the newer technology. If you know you're going to buy, why not go for the more current version?

I don't have any experience with the 20D, but the 30D is awesome. You won't regret it if you go that way.

Good luck.

Hi,

Go for the 30D.

The bigger LCD alone is worth the upgrade. It makes a huge difference in judging sharpness in a photo.

Don't forget spot metering and the possibility to change the ISO in smaller incremental steps. Very useful!

just wondering, is the focusing system of the 30D better than the 20D? i think i read somewhere that the 30D has the enhanced f/2.8 focusing system whilst the 20D doesn't. is this true?

To my knowledge, there isn't much of a difference in focusing capabilities between the two cameras.

the bigger lcd is a useless feature. it does not warrent the price difference between the 20 and 30D. you get the exact same camera (for the most part), for quite a bit more.
dont waste your money on a 30D. if you need more then a 20D, go full frame.

The 30D has spot metering and other useful advantages over the 20D. It's not simply screen size. As the price of the 30D continues to go down - it becomes a very attractive option.....

You are going to LOVE the feel of a magnesium alloy body as well coming from the XT. :-)

I'd suggest something different entirely. The 350D/XT is a great camera so its no hardship to hold onto it a bit longer. Wait for the 40D. Whats the rush?
I'd be surprised if this weren't a true 20D successor rather than the tweaked 30D.

Coming from the 350, I'd make the jump to the 30D. I wouldn't make that move from a 20D, but it makes sense in your case...

I agree with Steve. While it's generally not worth going from a 20D to a 30D, from a 350D make the bigger step to the 30D. No single feature's overwhelmingly better, but the combination of larger screen, spot metering, and larger buffer capacity will make it easier to stay with. I've frequently filled the buffer of my 20D (RAW+Small) just single-shotting for a sequence. A few more frames in the buffer can make all the difference in capturing a series of actions.

The annoying thing is, the 30D' s more efficient buffer is just a firmware update away on the 20D as there wasn't any hardware update involved apparently.

How about it Canon?
