Someone help me out with the differences between the two--10d vs the30d. Is the 30 that much better than the 10? I do a lot of action sports and after reading here, the 5d that I had been considering may not be the best fit for that. I also have concern with the 5d and the banding. Canon told me today it had to do more with the lens, which is also pretty much what I had read here. I just need some help before plunking out the $!!!

Thanks

For sports the 30D or 20D will absolutely smoke the 10D.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

With either the 20 or 30 you will not have that wait for the camera to wake up when you first hit the shutter button after the camera went to sleep. I think the focus system is faster and more accurate also. You also can get up to 5 frames per sec.

I suppose if you were looking for the best sports body it would be the 1DMK2N.

I had the 10D from its appearance until the 20D came out. I replaced it with the 20D shortly after it was on the market and found it to be what I had hoped the 10D would be. I like it still. My wife upgraded to the 30D, It is also a great camera. We like the larger LCD display. I would like the real spot metering also that my 20 does not have. She doesn't use it. (the spot metering) She uses the 30D a lot and I occasionally borrow it as a 2nd camera, but have not found it to be enough advantage over my 20D to replace the 20. That will be some other body, someday.

If you are buying new then go for the 30D. the 30D is 2 generations above the 10D. the DIGIC II chip makes the the 30D a good camera, which means that you have instant turn on and it's process the photos very well. (some will say the 10D has better photos)

for sports action it has 5 fps up to 30 frames in jpg. and shooting sports I would recommend jpg anyway.

Also the 30D has 9 point focusing over the 10d 6 point focusing and with the digic ii chip the focusing on it is way better.

No one mentions the obvious diff...coming from a guy who has a 10d on the way from fleabay...about $700 diff...and all that $700 buys...the instant start up for instant gratification, the more effective AF for those who don't manually or zone focus in low light, larger buffer for those love their motor drives and love to shoot their wad...

Pick up the 10d with your finger on the trigger and it'll be ready when it gets to eyelevel...select center focus for more accurate focusing (don't rely on the more complex 7 point system), and with practice single shot can be as effective as continuous mode (at 5 frames a second that's 200th/sec between shots, a good 5 shots between them at 1/1000th of a second that can be better...I shot sports for years without a motordrive, so I know)...

All of which is to say that you always have to work within the capabilities of your equipment...and the one dimension in which the 10d can't compete is the inability to use EF-S lenses...

You paid $700 for a 10D? That's waaaay too much. I got mine last spring for $500 and I've seen them as low as $350.

The 10D is a very nice camera in good light. I use it for a backup to my 20D for daytime field sports, and it does a fine job. Of course, I must be mindful of my timing, but I still have little trouble getting a good image from it. As for slow start up, I just lengthen the time in custom functions for it to stay on and that pretty much addresses that issue. It isn't a camera I'd use in low light for sports such as night football or basketball, however, but it holds its own in good lighting conditions. As for EF-S lenses, that isn't much of an issue for me, since I use prime lenses for the most part.

The 30D is better than the 10D in just about every way imaginable. The 10D is a fine camera that can be used very well within its limitations. I have both, and I've been using the 10D most even though I bought it second-hand more recently than the 30D new. For sports I go to the 30D.

I meant that the DIFFERENCE is $700...I got mine for a bit under $400...
and there's a guy selling a 30d here for $950 which is only $550 diff!!!!!!

Well...if you're new to SLR than I would say the 10D is the way to go. Much cheaper and for those who are just starting out (which I am), we probably don't need or wouldn't notice what the 30D does better than the 10D. It's a great camera to learn all the features of an SLR and when it's ready to upgrade... the 30D will be outdated. 10D all the way!! :D

The 10D is a fine camera and if you think that 3 FPS can handle the sports that you are going to shoot - then the 10D could be a possibility. The bang for the buck for a used 10D could be quite a bit higher than a 30D or a 20D. They are selling at such low prices - they have a nice price to performance ratio right now. Does the 30D have advantages - sure - but only you can decide if those advantages are worth hundreds and hundreds of more dollars. For me and what I shoot - it was not even close to being worth it.

Theres a side by side of them! For me, it's a budget issue. The 10D with a 50mm lens for $500 just can't be beat. I would like the 30D, but, the 10D is a great bargain.

Oh, and I also like the size of the 10D better, especially with the grip! It's the perfect size. This is subjective, of course.
