Hi all, after much research and much waiting, I decided to buy the rebel XT or 350 as it's sometimes called, and have started to play with it immediately.

I am seeing an immediate and consistent problem that I need help with. So far, when I zoom in with my 28-105 lens ( which was originally bought with a 35mm camera ), the image is severly underexposed. This is auto mode of coarse, but I need this camera to expose properly under normal indoor conditions. I have tried many different scenerios, and here is the strange thing, If I am not zooming in, image seems properly exposed, but once I zoom in, image is terrible, I mean really bad.

I hope there is a good reason for this, and is something I can fix. I cannot keep this camera if the work around is too complicated. In some circumstances, I have time to go into manual or semi manual modes, but like I said, I need this camera to perform in auto. I am also worried the problem could be a flash or lens compatibility issue, and again, that may be reason enough to start my research all over again. I bought this camera in great part due to the lens and flash I already have.

Thanks in advance guys

I don't have that lens but do have the 420EX and 350D/XT. I use my Tamron and Canon lenses on it and have no underexposure problems.

Can you check your +/- EV setting for me? That could be where your problem is.

Alternatively... Is your monitor/printer correctly calibrated?

If worst comes to worst, it could be the lens that's giving the problem. Can you check using somebody else's lens?

Can you check your lens on somebody else's XT?

those are excellent suggestions, I will do what I can, but don't know anyone with a rebel XT, I will go back to store and try a lens there if the +- are ok

when you zoom in all the way, is the 420ex zooming out to that focal length or is it staying at it's standard position (50mm, i believe?)? You should also try playing with the flash exposure on the long end of the lens.

IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

On the back of the 420EX, a light will light up underneath the focal length the lens is at, if the flash is pointed in the forward position.
If it isn't lighting up, I suspect your flash isn't zooming.
Another thing to consider is the 28-105, is it the cheaper non Mark II version? If it is, it is F5.6 on the long end, which is two stops (?) less light than the wide end (F3.5). That might make a difference.
