Are you kidding me?

There's like a couple dozen brands and 50 years of production history with every focal length and budget imaginable.

You gotta narrow down the budget, speed and focal length for one.

Well, good point. I guess I'm used to there being a feeling of few fast, sharp, and cheap lenses for the Canon mount.

How about 50's? What are some great 50's?

Jamie, what M42 lens did you use on the picture of the street car and building ? Very sharp. Nice shots. Ken.

Most of those were with the Pentax/Takumar 55 f1.8. You can get them on Ebay for around $30. Looking to add to your collection :D? In addition to the sharpness, I love the vintage feel to the images from these lenses. It's the coatings or the glass construction. or something that gives the images a unique vintage look.

Here's one now: http://****/y5ctho (external link)

I also have a 28 f3.5 that I like a lot: http://****/ygys9y (external link)

pentax takumar 1.4 SMC - "the best"
Zeiss planar 1.4 - the very best
They're about 100-200

Then there's 50/1.7 planar for 50bucks or so

58/2 russian heliar (I think) around 5-10 bucks

There's lots of 50s out there.

Just posted a thread on that one...

I think I mis-labeled it as an AIS lens in the post. Oh well...

some of the m39 lenses

M39 or LSM (Leica Screw Mount) lenses are generally designed for rangefinder cameras and would usually not be a good choice for adapting to an SLR. Some M39 lenses were made for reflex housings like the Visoflex and would be adaptable, but you would need to be very carefull to research which lenses would work on a SLR when adapting an M39 lens.

Some 3rd party lenses were made in M39 or T-mount and designed to be fitted with an adapter to connect to the required body type. Novoflex a high end German optical company was known for this.

Outstanding ... and I mean L class ... lenses I have in M42 or K Mount include:

Zeiss 135mm 3.5 - £60
Pentax 50mm 1.4 - £65
Pentax 50mm 1.7 - £25
Zeiss 35mm 2.4 - £60

price is what you may pay for a mint copy on UK eBay. Adapters for K Mount are around £30 and M42 about £10.

A friend at work who has been into photography forr over 40 years told me about an adapter he bought off ebay that converts his 350d into M42 thread. He then went on to tell me that he also bought several lenses of excellent quality(zeiss and pentax, I think). He showed me some images he had taken and the quality was outstanding.

So, as I only have a kit lens for doing portaits at present I thought I'd give it a good so I bought an adapter for £6 and recently a Pentacon f1.8 50mm (80mm on the 350d) for £20. It may be a mistake but I'd rather spend less than £30 trying to get a better picture than hundreds on a canon lens.

Anyone else done the same or have any comments?

Maybe you will find this thread interesting:

Buy the way, I have the Pentacon f1.8 50mm. Nothing special. Not sharp enough. If you are looking for a good 50mm, there are so many... I love my Leica 50mm f/2.0.

erm, I have canon 30D, and I use it with several manual focus lenses such as vivitar, pentacn etc. Its not very hard to focus it even at night, and I didn't even change the split screen. Just try for some time, u gonna get used to it very soon. and yeah some of those old lenses m42 mount are outstanding!
