I had my first paid shoot the other day for some friends from church that simply wanted a good photo to put in their Christmas cards.
We all in our church group do favors for each other and I told them I wouldn't ask for payment since they were friends. I had never shot for money before.
The shoot came and went and they paid me $50 cash, even before the deliverable was delivered
.
The deliverable was simply a CD with all the pics, good and bad, on it. I delivered the CD the following morning at church (we had the shoot Saturday evening) with a 4x6 complementary print of the best picture and they loved it.
For me, photography is strictly a hobby that I may make some money at here and there and believe me, if more people from church ask for me to take photos, I will have to get a more formal agreement in place.
I believe that if you really like something, the money will come. I, fortunately, am in a position to do favors and not charge what the market rate is for any work I do because I have a career in another field already.
Just wanted to share this experience.
Thanks to all the contributors on this forum and may you all have a Merry Christmas.
