This person wants to purchase my lens, but will only pay through https://www.escrow.com/index.asp (external link)

1. I've never heard of it
2. I don't really feel comfortable with it

Then don't do it? I wouldn't.

After looking around on the net, escrow.com seems legit, but I don't see it mentioned too many places. My general rule is that I won't do something I'm not really comfortable with.

I've heard something like this a few (at least a couple) years back on TV. I'm not sure if it's exact same company though. I thought they mostly do large transaction though.

When I sold my car to a woman in New York we used Escrow.com.

It's a high-end Escrow company that uses bank wires and people from the company contacting the seller and buyer over the phone verifying that the money is transfered and to ship the item and then when it gets there that the buyer is happy.

Sorry for the horribly written sentence, I'm tired.

make sure that it's actually escrow.com and not a spoof site. I'd personally wait for another selling that's willing to do paypal.
