I recently made the switch from f4 to f2.8. I have not regretted it at all and I love the f2.8 lens. Its a very good trade up.

As for this lens being the "Oldest" big deal. There is a reason why this lens STILL has not been discontinued. Because it is such a great lens and people buy it.
