Based on recommendations I read on the web, I did not buy the kit lens that came with the XTi but instead ordered a EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens to use as a "general" multi-purpose lens with it.

I would next like to purchase a telephoto lens in the next 6 months or so. I will never be a professional photographer so I don't want to break the bank, but would like something that is decent and will give me a really nice zoom.

What are my best options?

Also, what are the pros and cons of 3rd party lenses?

Canon 400D | 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS | 50mm f/1.4 | 70-200mm f/2.8L IS | Kenko 1.4X | White MacBook (to match the L glass of course) ;)

I bought several mid priced 3rd party zooms and then ended up withmy 70-200 f4 L and wish I had bought it right off the bat. It is the best bang for the buck without a dought. f you can't swing that then try the Sigma 75-300 APO but mae sure it is the APO version.

Canon 70-200 f4 L
Tanron 28-70 2.8 XR Di

Depends on your budget. For about $200 the Sigma 70-300 is the best in that price range. In the $600 range you've got the venerable Canon 70-200 f4L, or if you want a nice compliment to your 17-85, take a look at the Canon 70-300 IS.

I was looking at the 70-200mm f4 L for around $550 and noticed that the IS version was closer to $1100. Do you own the non-IS version? Coming from an IS lens, what would I need to look out for with a non-IS lens?
