Just received this "L" lens this am. Ran out in the afternoon to snap a few of my son's HS Frosh game. Real pleased with AF speed and acquisition. Typical low light HS gym, but fairly pleased with results with the second time out with the 5D.

The actions look nice but I think they are a tad underexposure. With the 85/f1.8 and ISO 1600, I could only get around 1/320 or 1/250 and in the middle 1/400.

How funny - used to live in Issaquah on Beaver Lake. Anyway. I think your < 1 stop off so I would think you could pull these images up in post processing without too much hassle. Looks like the lens was working for you... good job. I love the huge DOF you get with a wide. Are we serious here though.... the score was 75 to 20? Good golly! That was painful for one of the teams.

second and third ones look like if the focus was not on the players with the ball, rather a few feet behind them...

given you have a 5d, the 85 1.8 would probably be a better idea, as you can stand on the corner and shoot inwards, removing the back of the backboard from the shot

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Agree, I was fiddling with the new cam and settings. The lighting in the gym goes from good to bad in areas which makes it tough. My intent was to push things a bit and check results.

Thanks as always for commenting.

Small world :). I never favored the wider actions shots in the past, but I'm pleased with some of these. The 35 1.4L is pretty cool to use.

Unfortunately, a real blowout, but my son's team was on the winning end of it thank gawd :D. Shockingly, could have been much worse.

Thanks for taking the time to comment

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out the Canon focus system coming from Nikon bodies. It's not hard, but the features, etc are just different. I'm pleased though with the performance so far.

Position to shoot has been a learning experience indeed. ;)
