I met this guy at the bar last night and we got talking. I mentioned I was a photographer and he told me about a picture that he wants to get for his college before he goes on vacation. He wants a picture of the entire staff of his work (about 25 people) in front of the sign at his work with the building in the background. From what he describes it should be an easy shot. Then he wants it blown up to about 20X30 landscape and put in a nice frame (wood I think)

I have no idea what I would charge for something like this. I want to give him a good deal but I don't want to under charge him.

Any Ideas??

Price out the frame..and make a few bucks.
Price out the print at 20x30, and make a few bucks.
Price out your time, and charge accordingly.

That's my suggestion. Good luck with it, though.

Hmm..tough question. I wouldn't know, without you telling me the answer to my first two questions. The third one is a bit subjective, as it all depends on how much time, conditions, what equipment you use, etc. etc.

Maybe someone more experienced with sales of portraits that are framed, and large prints will chime in.

Thought, 300 doesn't sound too unreasonable...but again, I am not sure what comparable compensation would be....for a group shot like that.

I almost have the same predicament. I took pictures of a piece of apple pie. I took them for fun, and cause my brother asked me to. He then took the pictures to work (he works for a food distribution company that makes labels for private companies). The person that he gave the pictures to liked the shots a lot. John, let's say his name is, asked my brother what I would like for compensation/royalties/etc.

To me, they didn't request anything from me. So, I told 'John' that as long as the shot was used internal to the company, I would not charge them anything, as they didn't ask for anything. However, the moment that the shot goes outside of their internal network, I will charge them a 'fee' per time that it is used. Now, I could be 'screwed' here, as in, how would I know if they are using the shot outside of their 'internal' company. I have no idea...so, maybe I should have just charged them a fee...but would that be warranted, as they asked for nothing from me. I dunno, guess we shall see how it progresses from here.

Most portrait photographers charge at least $80 to $150 plus session fee ... plus travel.

Actually, if you consider the session fee should include time for processing and preparing proofs for client to choose - it should easily be over $100 and $150 to $200 plus would be reasonable. Then there is the charge for the actual print plus the frame. You need to find that out and then add a mark up and see what you get.

I think $250-300 would be reasonable.

[and this is probably even low for what someone would charge for a group portrait].

How about going and pricing this out and posting so you can help the next fella ... do unto others thing.

P.S. Part of the problem is you are doing this all for 1 print / 1 person. Now if you got 10 people going to buy 10 framed prints for, let's say $75 each [... let us know what you actually find out] ... then heck, you may only ask for $100-150 up front for example.
