I am one of those I will never go with another non 1 series body. I went from a 20D to a 1dmk2n and absolutley love it. I am doing some 16x20 print and the "quality" of the picture at the 8.1 mpix is a non issue for larger prints. I can not comment on the 5D as i have not used one.

People complain about weight of cameras etc, as you say it is not a issue for me either. I handheld my 1dmk2n and 300mm f2.8 lens for a race approximatly 8 straight hours without many breaks. Some comments from 5D owners seems to be on the defensive for some reason, I do not get it.

Goodluck in your decision and hope it fits you well.

After lugging around the 20D with grip and the 24-70 for about 2 months now, the 5D seemed a little heavier, but not much. The 1DMKIIN is a great choice. It's very sturdy and well balanced with the larger lenses. I'm responding to the weight issue here. I think the 5D is wonderful, but I don't take it with me on the field, at least not yet. If you are planning to really be out in the elements, you can't beat the 1D series. The N isn't much more money, really. If you can stand it, try it. If you don't like it, sell it. That's how I feel about all my Canon gear. With all the buying and selling around here, there should be no problems buying one and if you're not satisfied, get the other instead. Just remember, those who had 1D series cameras generally don't switch back.

Get a 1 and think of the gym fees you'll save ;)

Yes, it is about 12%. Resolution is LINEAR remember so look at the pixels per length, not the total.

The images from a 5D are seriously nice though!

At the very top for your selection is this: Display Current (external link) | All (external link) Cameras

SELECT ALL CAMERAS.

Wow great comparison, check out the 5D to the 1DMKII :(

Well Dan, those 1DMkII colors and contrast suck, in comparison. However, I'll say that from what owners of both (1DMkII and the N) have said to me, the N is a surprisingly large upgrade. IQ is noticeably better.

I had the same dilema a couple days ago. My mind was made up the minute I held them both in my hands and look through the view finder. Apart from mega pixels the 1D has the 5D beat in every way. I think the actual image quality is really going to come down to the user. Honestly they are so close. Where I live you can rent cameras that might be a good Idea if its available where you live. That was going to be my next step If the actual instore test didn't sway me. Anyway I decided on the 1Dmkiin because it had so many functions I probably would never outgro. The functions on the 5D were marginally better than the 20D, and would probably have me looking for an upgrade in no time. There are some more comments in the post I started, "Best canon for night photography" If actual pixel or image size is what your after then its a no brainer get the 5D. If you have the extra cash and want the functions then get the 1D. Like I said before the image quality is really going to come down to the user and what ever software you process with.

It depends. Image quality doing what? If you are doing sports for instance, you'll consistently get more image quality with the 1D rather than the 5D. Not that the 5D can't do sports, but all things equal with the same photographer, the 1D should be more versatile for the various sports.

I think your decision should be made off of what you plan to shoot, the majority of the time.

Now let me just cut to the chase and tell you what I plan to use my new camera for -- Mainly indoor low light events such as weddings. I just got a part time job as a second shooter and I need a camera that will perform best at high ISO such as 800 and sometimes create larger prints.

Sounds like the 5D is the right tool for the job.

Wow, the 1Ds seems to be much sharper out of the camera then the 5D. I wonder why...

5D still has awesome colors though.

It has to do with the anti-alias filter. You'll see a little more noise on the 1D, but gain more detail/sharpness out of the camera.

5D hands down. Larger sensor = better quality.

I love the 1 series cameras. I'd give anything for a 1Ds Mark II, but I can't afford it right now. The lure of the 1D Mark IIn is intoxicating, to say the least! I was sold on this camera for about a month before I made the decision to buy. When it came down to it, I went with the 5D. I am a wedding and event photographer in South Texas. I rarely do sports...a little surfing and school events, but my 5 handles them just fine. Plus I figured that the upgrade to the Mark IIn will be higher res, so 6 months (or whenever) from now, I can justify the 1 series. For what I do, I know I made the right choice for now.

there are like 11ty billion 5d vs 1d2 threads though. The answer is whatever fits your needs.

Both are amazing cameras, but share only quality photographs among them. Because they are in the same neighborhood price wide they get lumped together, but in reality are 2 completely different cameras. Your shooting needs and style should dictate what you get.

One other thought. Everyone in this thread, including myself, is neglecting the price difference between these two cameras. The 5D is that good that it is compared directly to the 2N for the type of photography you're interested in. That said, when you factor in the price as well, it's an absolute no brainer IMO. With current rebates, you could buy the 5D, a great fast prime like the 35L to compliment your zooms, plus a 580EX for the price on the 1D2N (roughly, I didn't actually do the math but I'm sure it's in the ballpark). Basically, the 4 major things you pay for in the 1D2N are:
Excellent AF -- more for the excellent Servo mode, for static subject in "one shot" mode, there is just not much difference.
Speed -- if you need 8.5fps, there is no absolutely no comparison to 3fps. No amount of image quality or resolution or low noise will substitute for this.
Weather resistance -- For most types of photography, this is really a non-issue.
Ability to customize -- Again, a non-issue for the most part...the customizing of the camera probably won't make or break your images.

Having said all that, the feel of the 1D2N is addicting and I'd hate to be without mine, but the 5D is your camera, no question about it. Just one other thing... please consider weight a non-issue, if the 1D2N turns out to have more appealing features for you, DO NOT let the weight of the camera sway you away from that... just deal with it, it won't cost you any great images.
