Doesn't copyright mean that the customer cannot reproduce the images for money...

No. Copyright means they cannot copy them. Period. Not for free, not for money, not at all.

Also Pekka (the owner of the board), if any situation arose from some infringement, shouldn't be accountable. There's the terms of the forum, and I'm sure he couldn't get sued.

Common sense says he shouldn't. The law says he can be.

they could get sued for anything - would the lawsuit go through? Probably not. My feeling is if you do have the cd of your own wedding images and aren't planning to reproduce them for commercial use, is there really a big deal? Everyone is too sue happy now a days.

What if you take the cd into a place like costco and order the sepia version or whatever... is this modifying the image? Yes.

If you want it modified, ask the photographer who took the image to modify it. That's only fair. I wouldn't want someone to alter the images, because if they do a crappy job I wouldn't want my work represented in that way. Especially if they were going to have them printed at Costco vs. a professional lab.

Could and has. Message boards have been successfully sued for not monitoring content before, no matter what the terms of service are.

This board is cracking me up. Why is it that providing a plain factual statement or correcting some incorrect information in response to what someone has said is "harsh", "barking", or "passionate"? Goodness. You guys need to get out more! :)

No, I'm not a lawyer. But I make my living from my copyrighted images, as do most professional photographers. I would think that it would be important for those of us who make our livings with our copyrights to know and understand how the law works. And when misinformation and just plain wrong data is put out there by pros and other pros believe it, it harms the entire industry.

Every professional photographer should actually READ the copyright law and understand how it works and how it applies to them, their businesses, and their clients.

So yeah, I *am* passionate about copyright. I'm passionate about protecting my rights. I'm passionate about protecting the rights of other artists.

LOL

Information still gets passed around here quite effectively... you just do it rather bluntly.

You'd get along well with Tim.

I'm no stranger to copyright issues. I've lost uncountable dollars due to infringement in both photos and software piracy. (I also have a degree in computer science)

Of course, this will vary somewhat from place to place, which is why it's important for people to understand the applicable laws for their own jurisdiction / country. One cannot assume that these laws are entirely consistent around the world either, particularly since many of the applicable copyright acts are woefully behind the times when it comes to digital rights.

Karen...blunt...? Yes. She is also a very successfull full time professional photographer, and one heck of a businesswoman. She's a very valuable resource to have on this board, and her blunt advice will earn you money!

Without passing on any other comment, this remark is among the funniest I have seen on this board!

I have no doubt you are very successful, Karen.

It's just a clash of personalities. I like to keep things really light. I'm just QUITE entertained by how our two personalities are approaching this topic in different manners.

And oh yeah, welcome to the wedding forum! :D

LOL. No hard feelings. Really I am more amused rather than offended - truly. Just makes me laugh that plain speaking is considered blunt. Message boards have really changed the perception of communications - if you don't smileyface everything, then you're often accused of being harsher than the words you say warrants.

I do get frustrated when people attribute a "tone" to my words that wasn't there to begin with just because I don't :) :) :) my posts.

But it's all good. Really.

And thanks for the compliments guys. I appreciate the backup and the kudos.

K.
