I lent my brother my xt with my 17-85 lens on it.
He shot 2000+ shots on it over the course of a weekend and three nearly identical shots taken consecutively have horizontal banding like the attached picture.

The striping isnt the whole image, but only a band about 1/4 the image verticaly.

The same setup was used before and after the three bad shots without any issues.

Any ideas?

That is very disturbing. I can't offer any help.

I can tell you that i had that happen to me a few times, in strange lighting conditions with a sigma 28-90mm i used to have. did he have a polarizer on the lens?

Looks like electro magnetic interference to me.

Arguing with a psycho clown can be harmful to your funny bone.

There wasn't a polarizer involved on the lens.
Perhaps the windows in the airport were coated either with a tint or polarized glass.

I think you answered your own question there, taking shots through windows can have an effect on the image...

Canon 40D :: 50mm f1.8 mk II :: 17-40mm f4 L :: EX 430 :: Canon EOS 50 :: Canon AE-1 Program :: FD 50mm f1.8 :: FD 28mm f2.8 :: FD 135mm f3.5 :: Ilford HP5 Film :: Developing kit. No website, nothing serious, I just like taking photos

Taking shots through windows can indeed have all sorts of effects on the image. Check out this thread for a pretty extreme example.

I've seen it before where it wrecks the whole image, not a small portion of it.
Typically when a polarizer is used, not with a straight lens.

This is the first time I've seen such an occurrence with a DSLR.

Got to love the setting my brother was using eh? 800 asa f5.6@ 1/2000th... Some people I tell yah...
