I'd love to find another charger for my 1D2N batteries but would very much prefer not to plunk down $300+ for it and i'm bringing it with me on a 7.5 month backpacking trip through india/SEasia so finding one a little smaller would certainly be nice.

I found one with UK plugs available at eastgear ( http://www.eastgear.com …_info.php?products_id=615 (external link) I know nothing of this company or store) which I guess I could use with my travel plug converters but it'd be much more ideal to find one with standard US plugs for when I get back home.

has anyone found any alternatives to the big expensive canon one? If so I'd LOVE a know where you got it.

thanks.

I went down this path about 6 months ago, and the closest I could come was a charger for the same type of battery, but it didn't have the proper plug for the Canon battery, so that would have to be fabricated or improvised. It wasn't a very good option. I ultimately bought an NC-E2 via the Fred Miranda Buy/Sell forum.

I don't think the volume of camera sales justifies a Brand-X version. Its not like you can come out with the charger and an assortment of plugs/cradles for the batteries of various cameras.

Have Fun,

Eastgear also sells the hyperdrive/compactdrive units, many people have bought from them and had the products at their door via FedEx in 3 or 4 days.

If you look carefully there is a US plug version listed too:
http://www.eastgear.com …ath=37_73&products_id=621 (external link)

I saw a review of this unit somewhere, and he was happy with it.

As for the volume issue- this battery format has been around since the introduction of the 1D. And while I get thousands of pictures out of a battery on my 1D2N, people used to carry 3 to 4 batteries to get thru a day.

I'm suprised there haven't been more competition in the chargers.

The Eastgear charger is an interesting option. The price is up there, and it doesn't seem to have the refresh button, but if I would have seen it when I was looking I might have pulled the trigger on it. I wanted one to keep at work so I could charge a battery there if I needed to.

Now, how about a 12 volt (car) charger? :)

Have Fun,

I think the Eastgear might be the way I go. It comes to $150 including 1-3 day international shipping. Thats less than half of the canon charger.

Anyone have any experience with this charger? I'll let you know what i think if I go that route.

Still open to other suggestions if anyone knows of any

I think that is a good move. The previous link to Eastgear came with a conversion to some "dollar" other than USD, and it appeared to be $200. When I went to the Eastgear site on my own it figured out that I am in the USA, and then I saw the prices drop.

Good luck with that, and let us know how it works. I might be interested in selling my 2nd NC-E2 to get one.

Have Fun,

Rick

SGD is the Singapore Dollar, it runs about 1.5 to $1 USD.

I'm pretty sure that it couldn't be that small and have refresh- one of the reasons for the size of the canon charger is for the heat sink attached to the circuitry that 'drains' the battery.

Interesting - I didn't know that. Not to hijack, but for my own use, that's not a major deal - I just don't want to have to lug the big Canon charger around if I want to charge the battery at work. I can do the refresh with the NC-E2 at home when necessary.

CoolToolGuy: Always happy to be of assistance

When you drain off energy (dischage the battery) it has to go somewhere, so it becomes heat. I built a little rig out of radioshack parts to discharge my BP511a batteries once in a while too- just some lightbulbs and wire... But those SterlingTek batteries will run those lights overnight to drain one of those batteries.

It seems Naturescapes is now (attempting) to stock that charger:

There is a big difference between nicad, nmh and lithium-ion batteries. The only one that needs discharged is nicads, compleatly discharging the nMh or lithium-ions actually does more harm than good. There is a wealth of info at this site. Many people dont charge their batteries properly and it does effect the life of the batteries.
