I kind of owe him because I convinced him that I need a 24" imac to "edit his photos". (it's sooooo pretty)

This is why I refuse to look at a Mac.. all style and no subtance...

anyway, as a general walkaround lens with excellent sharpness, both the 17-40L and the 24-105L are superb.
Not to mention the second one has Image Stablisation, which is a huge bonus as it'll allow him to shoot in lower light.
If you want a clubbing lens, I second the 35mm f/1.4 L as someone mentioned previously.
In a club, he can bump up the ISO to 1600, and not bother with a flash.
Or if that's a little pricey, check out either the 50 1.4 or 50 1.8

The 24-105 also gets my vote for you. It covers a very nice focal length and is meant to be a cracking lens.

Oh dear, another mac pc/mac argument spark flies

Thanks for the advice guys. We're going to go for the Tam 17-50. That way if I want a club lens too it's in the budget (not that we've made a budget...haha reading about 10k in a year sounds scary!)

You guys will probably be hearing from me again in terms of making a studio. Hubby convinced me it may be a cool project...

Oh, and the pics from the next week's bday will be posted when i get em...;)

So I see lots of votes for the Tamron 17-50 and am now leaning towards it. Two questions:
1. The lens mount in the product shots looks plastic, is it?
2. I have heard concerns that it has problems focusing in low light, please comment on this if you have used the lens in low light.

Find out how the camera is used before getting the Tamron.

If the photographer likes to focus manually and relies on full time manual focus override you will want a Canon USM or Sigma HSM lens that features full time manual override. None of the Tamron or Tokina lenses have that feature.

Other people never focus manually so this is not important to them.

There is one thing that I don't think anybody has mention yet, if in case your photo hobby shoul grow and decide that crop sensor is not your thing and FF sensor is more your cup of tea EF-S lenses are useless for FF Camera Bodies. So if you might be interested in the future I would go for the 17-40f4 or the 16-35F2.8L.

The other thing is spending more money on lens may not be what you need to shoot sharper pictures, technique is more important. No matter how good the lens is its the person behind it that makes the picture.

Full frame is irrelevant to 95% of photographers. Get the lens that works best with the camera you have instead of compromising for some camera you will probably never have. The 17-55 is far superior to the 17-40 on the camera you have now and the ones you are likely to have in the future.

So we went to order the Tamron and it's sold out on amazon. B&H doesn't ship to hotels (hubby is a consultant travelling at the moment) and it's sold out on adorama. He thinks it's a sign to buy the Canon lens which to me signals that what he wants...should I let him get it even if it's $550 more?

Still can't believe it's not an L :(

...Sorry if I don't bow down to your L god. It is just a marketing gimmick that Canon uses to designate some of their better lenses to help them sell better.

To call the "L" designation on a Canon luxury lens just a "Marketing Gimmick" is like calling the US Navy SEALs or the British SAS just another marketing ploy to get more people to join-up. The "L" designation itself doesn't make the lens special, but the quality of the material, the precision of the instrument itself and the overall method used to produce an "L" lens do.
