I think that Epson makes a fine bunch of scanners. I've got a 6 year old Perfection 1200 Photo and it's still going strong. How do the specs on the 4490 and the Canoscan 9950f compare, and what will be your primary use?

theyre pretty much equal...yet for the $100 price difference, im sketchy about the canon and why its so much higher priced. My primary use is to take all these 4x6's and get them on comp. Im not expecting lab results, but i DO want a high quality clean scan of them. I dont have the negatives/slides. All I have is the actual photos and I want to know which of these 3 is best to scan that kind of material.

There's always someone for somebody, so I'm sure the love of your life is out there somewhere  .

Have you tried googling reviews on any of the graphic design forums, PCWorld.com or Cnet.com? The have pretty frequent equipment reviews of tech. There's also Epinions.com. Find where artists and designers hangout on the web.... they're bound to have views on this stuff.

did i mention these 4x6's are from only about 15 years ago? theyre all kept in perfect condition, they havent faded, they havent ripped, or collected dust (theyre in sleeves). So if I do go with something cheaper like the 4490, I can expect a good scan right?

I would think so - practice with a couple of different scanning resolutions and see if one gives you better range than the other. Then print a few and compare them to the original. You'll eventually find a balance between optimum resolution, file size and quality of output. - Stu
