I purchased a used 30D for about half of the original cost. Cosmetically the camera is in perfect shape, side by side a new you can’t see any difference. Not even the slightest wear on the grip.

It is now at folder 909. Any ideas on activations? Remaining life.

I have 2 weeks to return it for a new body.

Thx

Did you use a CF card from another camera?

Canon cameras have a habit of taking the last file number from a CF used in any Canon camera.

IMHO with any new camera you should use a freshly formated CF card - formated in a card reader via the PC and then place it in the camera and format it again ready for use.

Also, to avoid confusion if you have more than one body keep your CF cards separate and allocated only to that body.

HTH maybe :)

I usually use 3 CF cards. I always format them in windows, if it makes a difference.
I am using my card that I have used for the past year in my 350D.
The folder is number 909 and the image count just rolled past 9999 to 0001
The store owner told me that it had 9000 clicks.

Thanks for the responses

101-0001 is the first photo in folder #1
101-0100 is the last photo in folder #1
the counter to the left of the -
turns over when the right side of the -
begins a new 100
102-0101 is the first photo in folder #2
102-0200 is the last photo in folder #2
103-0201 is the first photo in folder #3
109-1000 is the last photo in folder #9
110-1001 is the first photo in folder #10

each folder contains 100 photos/actuations
123-xxxx = 2,3xx photos
223-xxxx = 123 folders (remember the first column began at 1) = 12,3xx photos

929-xxxx = 829 folders = 82,9xxx photos/actuations

I think...

Hmmm!!!
My 350D is up to folder 181 currently image number 8151

I seems to me that based on the CF folder count that the camera has over 90,000 images taken on it. The MTBF for the 30D shutter AFAIK is 100,000

So, if the calculations and assumptions (i.e. that the camera folder count has never been reset and you used a PC formated card the very first time you inserted one in the 30D so that it took up the camera 'data') are correct that 30D has had a lot of hard usage in its relatively short life.

If it were me I would not be buying it!

Mind you, even if the buyer has to replace the shutter soon he/she will still come out ahead if they paid half price for it so long as nothing else breaks...

The only true way to know the shutter activations if for canon to check it themselves with their service software.
Anything else really is guesswork. The file numbering system is a poor way to judge except by people who have owned the camera since new and take steps to keep the numbering consecutive.
I don't think it's worth going back and paying double when the shutter probably won't fail before you're ready to off it. How many shots do you average? Even if the shutter does fail down the road, it's replaceable for $160-200 i believe.

Just as a point I was messing around in the menus and clicked the manual number reset and the camera than went to the next folder number. On a 30D a folder is 10,000 images. So did I just mis-click in the menu, or add 10,000 actuations ;)

It's unfortunate that Canon hides this information.

30D etc.

I just emailed canon for verification of my calculations...

There is nothing wrong with your math. The problem is your math is based on something file numbering system isn't designed to keep track of. It is very easy to change the file numbering.
The only way to know actuations for certain is for canon to extract it with their service software.

To be honest... the 30D has the capability of manual reset of the folders... so conceivably one could hit the manual reset 900 times and end up with 900 folders. I haven't tried it myself, but I'm thinking you can do this without ever snapping the shutter. So trying to determine how many accuations using this is a bit of a crap shoot.

Lets say Kitacanon is correct in his math don't you think the camera would show some signs of wear ? Maybe on the grip or trigger ?
Regardless I have a couple of weeks to decide.

for the 20D this is true... for the 30D this is NOT true

Sorry for the confusion...I guess if the file size is 999 rather than 99, then 909- would be about 8+K actuations...

Enjoy your new cam....
