well ive put me neck out and bought the MF4 and the 488RC4 head.

The Manfrotto ...RC4 mounting plate is HUGE for a 35mm-sized SLR. It is really designed for medium format and larger cameras. The photographs don't really do the difference justice, but you will have trouble putting the camera into a case with the ...RC4 mounting plate attached. The reason for a quick-release system is so that you can leave the QR plate(s) attached to your camera body and/or your long lenses which have tripod mounting capability.

You can buy a kit to replace the ...RC4 quick release system with the ...RC2 system after the fact, but it is less expensive to buy the ...RC2 system up front.

I have a pair of the 488 RC0 heads, one on tripod, and one on monopod. Darn good head, especially for a bigger camera/lens combo. I think you'll really like this setup.
