After sending back my new 1D MarkII to Canon several times because of a large amount of dust in the viewfinder, they finally replaced it with a new (refurbed) 1D MarkII N :) Apparently they dont have a dust free room at Canon Service in Canada  Every time they tried cleaning the viewfinder, they just made it worse, and couldnt get at the real culprits without opening the entire camera and again, making it worse.

But, just as with the other camera, this one has a few dust specs visible in the viewfinder. In both cases, these specs are not on the focus screen, but somewhere up inside the viewfinder itself. My 20D and 300D never had any viewfinder dust. Is this just part of owning a large, bright dslr viewfinder?

In the poll I only included the 1 Series and 5D because they have much larger viewfinders, and I know from experience with my 20D and 300D that viewfinder dust was not a problem with the smaller crops.

I can't rid of the dust. Have tried every thing known to man except take it somewhere. I just ignore it at this point.

I have a couple of specks that I'm sure are on the pentaprism. I've removed the focussing screen, so I know they are not there. Sometime soon I'll make the time to wipe down the prism on the 5D, then I'll know for sure.

I'd never send it back for a factory cleaning since more dust always gets in. <shuug>

Edit to say it is a 5D.

Unless the dust is obscuring the view completely...I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. If I can see thru the finder and get a rough estimate of what I am aiming for...I really don't worry about a dust speck or two...

Getting upgraded to an N just ices the deal. Just tell yourself there is nothing there.

I have HUGE specks in my viewfinder and at first they bothered me but after a short while, I don't even notice them!! Everyone else who looks through the viewfinder always makes a comment on how dirty it is and I should clean it! I know it is on the inside where I'll never get to it so I just let it be..........

Thanks for the info, I will update my sig MrClark!
Birdstrike, I was shocked to find out that even if the dust is above the pentaprism, Canon, in Canada at least, can't clean it! They don't have dust free environment. They tried to clean my original 1D many times over 4 months and made things so bad, that is why they replaced it with the N, and gave me a whole new warranty for not having a camera for so long. So, yes, Woolburr, I think I should just take the N as icing on the cake.

Schmoelzel, you have to really think I'm anal since I posted a similar thread way way back. I remember you and Mrclark talking about how dirty your viewfinder was LOL. I guess I was just so used to having pristine viewfinders on my 20D and 300D, that I'm surprised to see so much dust inside a sealed 1 series. I have also heard the 5D can get pretty bad. I guess that's the price you pay for having such a nice big viewfinder. If the dust was just on the focus screen, or somewhere cleanable, that wouldn't bother me at all. What has bothered me most is knowing this dust can't be cleaned at any point.

Not had my 5D long and it's started getting specs already. I think it's just a case of ignoring them, if I started worrying about them I think I would get obsessed.
By the way, cleaned my sensor with a blower t'other day and a spot kept appearing in slightly different areas on the pic, after 3 attempts I realised it was a nail on the wall I was pointing it at! Derrrr :-)
