Hey guys (first topic!),

I am working on a theoretical product for my business class, so this isnt actually being offered (yet?) but wanted to see how many of you would be interrested.

The gist is that you connect your Canon to a broadband equiipped cell phone with USB jack (or possible other connections). The cell phone automatically uploads images from your camera as they are taken to your respective photohost, e.g. Smugmug, Photobucket, Flickr. It would probably be offered as a monthly fee ~$5-10 USD.

Any comments would be appreciated, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this.

Chris

I'd rather have it upload to my home computer's external hard drive. I prefer to edit my shots and choose which to post on a website.

Putting that aside, you might want to invent something akin to an overnight package delivery service. Now that would be useful.

The first sentence is actually a neat idea.. the second one, didnt FedEx do something like that? ;)

Obviously, there would be a ton of hurdles to overcome to realize something like that, but is a little more practical than other classmate's ideas such as "old people airbags" to avoid breaking bones. :D

I not sure I really understand what you want. What I think is that you want to be able for us to put are pictures on are cell phone and send them to a web site. Most cell companies wouldnt do this because it would really slow the system by going from phone to antennea to satelite to other satelite to new antennea to web to web server to website

It wouldn't interest me at all. I shoot with DSLR's and have to process my images before uploading. I'm not a point and shooter.

not for uploading, but an option for wifi connection similar to Canon's thats more customizable and cheeper would be good.

it would be too slow via phone, kill cell phone battery etc. Plus they do need to be edited.

how about a cell phone app to control terthered shooting (aka a new remote)

Interesting you don't have the #1 photohost listed as an option...I also can't envision why I would want to upload a hi-res unprocessed image to my photohost, like Mark suggested...perhaps to my home system. The other problem is for people shooting RAW...what is the point of hosting a RAW image? I don't use my online photohost as an off-site storage center...it is strictly for viewing purposes.

I reallized the RAW issue after making my last post... I think like you,Woolburr, and MDJAK said, a way to either upload to your computer/external HD or FTP (provided you have FTP accessible webspace), is probably an even more important idea as you said about the fact of PP.

Thanks for actually taking the time to post your opinions and ideas, I appreciate it!

Edit: I realize the concerns about upload speeds, currently are about 300-400 kbps, so about 4 minutes to upload a RAW image, although future speeds are expected to reach around 2.5 Mbps, at which this would be much more feasible.

I could see using it on a special shoot, like if you shot a baseball game and told people "When you get home, go to www.com (external link) and the pictures will be there"

Stuff like that where your just going to use JPEGS out of the camera.

Well as I work for a major cellular company, I can easily say that all of our customers that being Sprint, Verizon, AllTel, KDDI, amongst many others are diligently working to provide just such an infrastructure. Any feature that offers everybody the ability to move large amounts of data would be very welcome just as long at its billable. Also, the data path is not that complex. It is more like from mobile to base station, to central office to data network.

Ok that seems more likly as mine were kind of not so out there but I just think that if they charge so much per text message it would be alot for a 8mb RAW picture

Oh yea!!! Well, at least at first. The more infrastructure thats installed, and the more people use a feature, the price eventually cones down.

I mean, network capacity unused is, well not making $$$. All these network providers do a carefully balancing act. How much to infrastructure is needed to maximize cash flow. Sometimes offering cheap rates to sell unused capacity makes more $$ in the long run.

The general concept has some merit. I agree with Nicks comment. Either way, someone will be offering something like that quite soon.

The issue here might not be your idea, but your survey universe. Many (most?) people here are producing high-res, RAW images in need of processing prior to display. However, the vast majority of "photographers" are using lower resolution, JPEG cameras. A poll among those users would likely result in a more positive response.
