Hey, I would have liked to have held out for at least a while but the guy sprung this idea on me just yesterday. Too good to pass up. It's something I really want to do..more so than spending time alone at home with a 1-series.

This has blown me away. Ron, buddy, take this as good advice. Pick your gear and stick with it. That is if you are not willing to put any "NEW" money into it. Because eventually (probably already) you will have lost so so much on Shipping these items to you that you could probably afford your 12th 24-70 L lens right now.

Being unemployed for almost a year once I know how touchy the subject is but get some sort of income so you do not feel like you don't deserve your gear. It's an absolute terrible thing to keep doing this to yourself, its bad on your self esteem and bad on your heart and stress level. Even if you don't think so.

When I was once short on money, I sold almost everything I had, rebought it with the money I sold it for, sold it, bought it, etc just like you but it was my collection I built up for years and I just could not let go.

Could be that the reason you keep selling your gear is because you are more into the hunt of finding a camera or lens and trying it out more then actually using it for photography? You would certainly not be the first photographer who really isn't crazy about it.

Anyways, best of luck with the new gear you'll be buying soon. One extra word of advice, Don't blow your 1DMKIIN money on nothing but lighting or you will most likely take a huge loss when you resell it. Its harder to sell then a lens or camera guaranteed.

Is this idea legit and in writing? What if he passes on you and goes with someone more "professional"? You are putting a lot of faith into what this guy told you.

The only one I could sell my gear for on his word alone is if Jesus Christ came down to me, in person and told me to sell my gear. Even then I would have a hard time I think.

I really hope this works out for you.

new bet:

do you think that Ron will actually go forward with that "business" idea?

i got $20 on NO (are you writing this down Dante?)

i think that just like he gets tired of his gear, he will soon get tired of shooting portraits especially when it becomes a business..

How about a pool for Rons next 1D series camera. Can be any of the 4 (actually 5 but not likely a 1D)? I say the week of March 12th 2007.

solid advice. Ron, i think that you should take a long hard look before you go ahead with the deal. i know many people who really enjoyed photography but only as a hobby. after they started shooting pro, they really regreted it not to mention hated the business side of it. if you want to shoot for the local play house than that is great. however, you are in fact putting alot of faith into it and already going out and buying the gear before you even have a gig...

I'm not buying everything until he says I can move my stuff in. He's not doing it for himself, he's doing it for me. He's a close friend of my mother. He wants to help me out. He's got the space, and I've got the talent. I'm just buying the 30D now, and keeping the money for lighting and such until I need it. Like I said, though, I don't depend on my photography. It's a hobby that I just happen to be able to make money from, here and there. I like it that way.

As long as we're all dispensing unsolicited advice to our young friend, I might as well add my own two cents.

Ronald, we love you dearly. (Damn, I wasn't going to say that.) If we didn't care about you, we wouldn't be making these suggestions.

Having said that, you really have to think about how you're going to feel about photography when it becomes obligatory---when you have to be in the studio at times you'd rather not be there, when you're taking pictures of people you don't particularly like, and sitting up half the night doing post-processing and not trading zingers with your POTN friends. A lot of people have screwed up a really great hobby my making it their job. Make sure you're not doing that to yourself. If the only reason you want to be a professional is to own professional gear, it's probably not worth it.

Nah...I'm not in this hobby to "own professional gear". I wanted to try it out, sure, and I have. As a matter of fact, I'd be a professional, so to speak, that doesn't own professional gear. A 30D and alienbees is hardly what the "uppity ups" would call professional. It works, though, and that's what matters. I can have a 5D or N with L glass, sure. I could keep all that and just do it as a hobby. I wanna try it out, though. No harm done to me. If I don't like it, I'll quit it. See, I won't be in a lease or anything, which is nice. I can get out anytime I want. If I don't like it, pft...I don't have to do it! :-)

I know what you're saying, Tom. I don't know how I'll feel about having to take pictures for a living. I think I'll really like seeing the results, especially while I'm learning. I like to see my skills progress. I also get a really good feeling when I take pictures for someone and they're happy with them. I think it's nice knowing that I gave them those memories, you know? When I look at any picture I've taken, I just like being able to say "wow..I just captured that moment forever". I love hearing people say how they like what I've done for them. Makes me feel like a good person.
