Was clearing down some space on the hard drive last night and archiving some of the pics from Tuesday night and came across these.

Bit of a theme with all the players being in the air, so thought in the interest of continuity and uniformity, I would post them together!!

Thanks for looking, C&C, as always, are welcome.

Lighting wasnt the greatest, 1/250 @ f2.8 were the settings off the top of my head....then again, have come across a lot worse!

Excellent Shots Tall_Paul, would be more than happy with shots like these.
I try on a weekly basis to get good shots of my Son's under 15's team and would be MORE than happy if I could get them to look half as good as this. Natural light on a 3:00pm kick off this time of year is hard work.

Have you done any PP on these? If so, out of interest / self education, what ?

Thanks Nigel......quite a bit of practise has gone into getting results I'm happy with regularly. I found the negatives (yup, remember those?!) the other day of the first football match I covered a while back and they were woeful!

This time of year is a struggle for light - last weekend at the rugby by 4pm I was at ISO1600, 2.8 and about 1/200. Not that I am usually an advocate of doing this, but as the light fades you could try shooting in RAW, underexpose by say 1 stop and then push the exposure when you convert from RAW to JPEG in PP. Just an idea, might be worth a try.

As for PP on these - only PP was to pass through noise ninja, crop, resize and apply USM. I have found that as I am shooting more and more events (typically I am covering 2 or 3 sports events on a Saturday afternoon now) I prefer to keep PP to the absolute minimum level.....largely as my boredom threshold is so low that I lose patience if anything drastic is required!!:D

Top job Paul,

Are you covering 3 full events in 1 day? I regually cover footie in the afternoon and BB in the evening but I don't think I could add a third full game of something (hockey or rugby does looks intresting though!).

Hi Darren,

Thanks for the comments..........

As for covering the events, tomorrow, now my diary has been finalised, I have Hockey (12.30), Football (1.30), Rugby (2.30).......they are all on the same side of town, so shouldn't be too much of an issue getting between them. Also the rugby lot are playing that badly at the moment, that I can spend a little more time at the hockey and football, knowing that I can get the pics I need from the rugby in a shorter period of time.

I don't particularly like doing 3 events as it puts more pressure on to get the shots you need in a shorter period of time, but then again its has its plus points in that it focusses the mind somewhat and I find I concentrate a lot more on what I am shooting and hoping to achieve.

Needless to say, by tomorrow evening I will be knackered!!

Nice shots. I dont know about your lighting but I probably would have helped if you raised the speed of the camera

Thanks Marc - busy is an understatement! But am enjoying it which is the main thing.

Am starting to wonder whether attempting to move to do NLP or Agency stuff may be the way forward for 2007......we shall see however. Any thoughts on the matter would be gratefully received!!

Brad - thank you for your comments.

Not sure whether you are referring to ISO or shutter speed......

ISO.......I try and avoid 3200 wherever possible, especially since these were for the paper, so as to keep the noise limited and the image quality as high as possible.

Shutter speed.......yes, I could possibly have gone to 1/320 however it would have resulted in pulling the image back to the correct exposure in PP and on Tuesday I didn't have the time (nor inclination) to do that. I generally feel - and nighttime soccer shooters please feel free to agree/disagree - that as long as the majority of the pic is sharp (ie in focus and motion frozen) then a little motion blur in the hands/legs or the ball is ok.

Would be interested to know which you were referring to though.

Thanks for looking
