The league/level that the Pro's (Marc, Gavin etc.) work at is very closely guarded, and in my opinion for a very good reason.

The basic's are:
Insurance cover needs to be over £5m
You need a licence or be working under an agency/ publication that has one. The licences have a lot of stipulations and requirements
You need to have an publication/source for the pictures

To be honest, other than the crowd and jube shots you can get the same images at your local non-league sides. I'm not saying that I would not love to shoot a Premiership game, hell even a decent league side but just because the side is top flight means the images are any better than a none league side.

I'd imagine the game play moves a lot quicker in the Premiership than in my local semi-pro side.

Darren has covered most of the basics above, IIRC there are a shed load of threads covering this. Try checking out Gavin's (gmen) posts in the Sports Q&A thread.

Marc,

Might be an appropriate time to ask, how did you get to the stage of shooting for agencies (sportsbeat isn't it?) - how did you work your way up?

Paul,

Only just seen this question !

how did you get to the stage of shooting for agencies

Being generally irritating , always asking questions and NEVER giving up. This time last year I had maybe only had a SLR for 6 months and my only sports shooting experience was sitting down at AUFC every other weekend. Through this I managed tobuild up a folio of pics that I touted about, someone saw these and gave me a go at the Leicester v Reading Championship game earlier this year.

Since then I've done more and more, packed in my regular job on a Saturday and been lucky enough to get work from another agency.

I'm still asking questions, although these days it's not a PM or email to Gavin evry 5 mins for a change..bet his ears are burning now ;)

HTH a bit ?

Marc,

Thanks for that - had actually forgotten I'd asked that!! Its interesting to see how your shooting has improved over the course of the year - the pics you have posted recently have been a whole different class!

Have replied by email as there are a couple of questions that I want to ask which are probably not for the forum as are a bit too specific.

But yes, has definitely been of help!

Thanks

Paul

Dan, that is a wicked picture. Do you have the EXIF data? Your website shows you have a Sigma 70-300mm APO DG 4-5.6 Super Macro II. If this image was with that lens it's cracking lens.
