Is this what most sports shooters use under the tripod collar of the 300 2.8 IS?

I just mainly need support, I don't want the lens to fall off, and I want to preserve the paint on the bottom of the collar by not screwing in the monopod each time. I have the Manfrotto 680B monopod, will it support the 300 2.8? It supported the Sigma 120-300 2.8 just fine.

Can't tell you if that's what most sports shooters use but I can tell you that that's what I use for my EF 300 f/2.8 IS lens. That plate is a perfect fit for the 300. :)

BTW, I'm assuming that you have an Arca-Swiss style head or clamp on your monopod. Otherwise, that plate is not going to do you any good with that monopod.

What do I need then?

I just want to attach the lens to the monopod with a plate in-between, with a quick release.

Nice post count, BTW!

You'll need this or something similar to it:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com …EG&addedTroughType=search (external link)

The QR adapter screws directly on to the monopod and will allow you to attach the 300 f/2.8 lens with the P20 QR plate.

Be sure to follow the directions that comes with the adapter when mounting it on to the monopod to prevent it from unscrewing loose.

Not a lesser choice are the Kirk Lens Plates:

And the one that suits perfectly the 300 f/2.8 IS is show in here:
