Thank you so much for this great intro, it's extremely helpful to this beginner.

I wish the books I've read had summed it all up in the beginning chapter as well as you have. It would have made learning so much easier for me.

It takes time and effort to offer this knowledge to us and it is much appreciated!

Bill,

For some time I have had in interest in photography but never really put it into practise.

I decided to treat myself to a EOS 400D for Christmas so now have the learning curve ahead of me !

I just wanted to say many thanks for your time and effort putting this article together. As a total novice it reads perfect and explains things in a style I understand.

Thanks again !

Bill,

I am not a novice, but I think you did an excellent job on your write up. You explained camera functions so that someone just getting into the dslr world could understand them. I don't believe that knowing how to arrange the aperature fraction is going to be of much use to someone just starting out with their first dslr. :D

Although I know and understand everything you explained, I don't think I could have explained it the way you have. Therefore, I will not sit here on the sidelines and throw rocks at someone like you trying to make a difference.

Again, great job on your write up!

Thanks ... my biggest fear was that I'd put a lot of time into writing it and no one would see it or it would get quickly lost somewhere on page 2. I'm glad to see its still getting use. :D

That is about the best digest of photo info I have ever seen. With your post, someone who has just the basic familiarity with their camera could start to take better pictures. Great job!

Glad it's still making the rounds .... I'm still open for any questions anyone might have that isn't explained here.

MOD......This needs a sticky:D :D :D

I am a noob and I am eating up all the info I can.....Many Many thanks BILL!

You asked in an earlier post about further 101 lessons? I can tell you that one area is SERIOUSLY lacking in information and that is the basics of interior (low Light) shooting. Almost every text on Amazon either has horrid reviews, or pre-dates the digital era.

Anything on this subject would be most useful (how about a collaborative effort from the experts here)?

In any event....MOST helpful:D

Set aside the notion that a pre-digital text is not valid, and you must find a digital text! Photography and good exposure principles and lighting are the same, the capturing media (film, sensor) are different. Shooting digital is most often said to be like shooting color slide film...their similarity is the lack of breadth of dymanic range (vs. color neg or B&W), their intolerance of overexposure. But apart from a few techniques that are applicable to digital (and not film), the underlying principles are identical.

Don't know how we missed this excellent thread!
Next time feel free to use "report post" or PM a mod to get a sticky .. :)

As soon as Bill says the first post is "done" I will also copy that post to the EOS/EF LEns faq thread.

Bill, if you could do one more edit..

Thank you Bill. Very informative and well written DSLR 101 article.
I learned several things I thought I knew, but didn't fully understand.
How about doing a 101 on white balance and lighting....?

Nice av. ;)

Also, thanks to Bill Ng for taking the time to help the rest of us understand our equipment better.
