My take - just an idea - the original image was great but there was a bit much empty space for me, and it was a bit central. Plus I just like 16:9 type crops.

Pretty pretty image. Taken in natural light...? Reflectors? Fill flash? Thanks!

Hi Tim - crop is nice. When this shot goes in the album it will probably be cropped in some way.

Jamie - natural light. Sun is coming from over his left shoulder and slightly behind to create the rim light.

The extra empty space was the first thing I noticed. I like Tim's version. Cute pic! :)

I like the crop! NICE PHOTO :) Which method did you use for a black and white conversion?

The black and white conversion was done in Canon's DPP RAW converter. Just selected monochrome and pushed the contrast slider.

I would go for a tighter crop too.

That's cute, Jonny, but I think his face should be a bit softer. Although I think your B&W conversion looks the best so far.

Agreed, if i was doing the processing for a print i would definately soften the skin - especially the guy.
BW conversion is something i really work on and pride my self on the results.

Be careful softening skin on guys, it can make them look ten years old. It works better on women because we're used to seeing that.

Looks like Jon has sharpened his - I applied some softening to the image but left the eyes sharp.

Personally it now looks over sharpened.
