*edit* I just realized you wanted it to tell the actual lens, sorry I missed that and thought you just wanted exif data. THis just tells focal length of the lens

I have windows xp, and I can right click on any picture file I've taken, and then click "properties" on the menu. Then click the "Summary" tab. Then if you don't see all the data, click the "advanced" button at the bottom, and it will give the exif data.

The EOS viewer utility shows the lens info. So does CS2 but it costs money and lots of it.

Of course, havent seen a program that shows full info, about the lens like Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. It just shows 28-75.

Make a keyword of each of your lenses, that's what i do. It's not what your after but it's still a good idea. That way you could search through lenses.

I use Exif Viewer (Mac) I just drag a photo from the browser onto the icon on my dock.

I use EXIFPro as my viewer and it will report which lens was used. It reads the Canon Maker Notes section of the EXIF.

The Image Database I use (IMatch) will do this also. There are quite a few scripts written for IMatch that will analyse your shooting habits based upon the EXIF info that has been imported into the DB.

Do these EXIF programs tell you the exact lens that was used or just the focal length? How does it know exactly what lens is being used?

They will usually tell you both the exact lens that was used and the focal length. Another value is Subject Distance and info on the subject distance will depend on what lens is used. I remember readding somewhere ( maybe here) generally lenes with Ring Type USM motors for focusing will report back the subject distance.

As to how it knows which lens was used my guess is this info is passed from the lens back to the camera as part of the protocol for focusing and aperature control.
