I got a new 85/1.8 so I went and shot the first game (preseason) of the year.

Even with f1.8 ISO 1600, I had to use ss around 1/320 or so. :(

Some pics, CC welcome. I'm looking to improve this year.

I shot these last night at 400 ISO, 250/sec f/5 with the flash at 1/2 power. I did run them through noise ninja and I did lighten the shadows some in PS.

The only problem I have to eliminate is the red eye.

Nice shots, but if you'd had a Canon you wouldn't have needed a flash. :) :p

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

RDM3, nice action shots. Yeah, I'm trying not to use flash due to red eye but I think I have to resolve to that as I don't have strobes setup. :(

Thanks for the compliments, I wish I had strobes, but that will never happen for me, I shoot sports for the local paper and I cover 3 high schools.

I would prefer to shoot at higher iso than to use flash. Photos just look more natural.

If you can get the flash off camera to eliminate red eye and keep the flash power to about 3 stops above ambient light you will get a more natural look, otherwise pump the ISO and shoot with just ambient light.

How do you set the flash power 3 stops above ambient light?

I can set it to 1/8 1/16 power but how to calculate that into stops?

If you mean by setting the FEC to +3, would that wash out the image?

This is how I would do it for on camera flash, If you know that ambient is ISO 1600 f1.8 1/500 sec, based on your EXIF info of your first shot, The first thing I would want to do is lower the ISO, if i go down to ISO 800 that is one stop, I would actually go to ISO 400 2 stops lower than what you need to shoot ambient, I like shallow DOF so I would leave it at f1.8, Shutter speed I would then adjust one stop to 1/1000th's. Set camera to manual with these settings and let the auto flash do its work. You can meter the flash to get there as well, this is what you would need to do if you used strobes or flash setups off camera. You are setting your camera to 3 stops below the ambient setting and letting the flash fill in the rest of the light. If you still find this to harsh you can adjust one or two stops down to your liking.
Hope this helps in a quick explanation.

Pete

i think *it* means 3 stops below.... either way, shoot higher iso with an 85 1.8, OR, bounce the flash off the roof (in a majority of gyms you will be doing both or just pumping iso)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Yes my mistake on the first post, 3 stops below is correct...

Thanks, for catching that,
Pete

The gyms ceiling is to high to bounce, and I am using a 2.8 lens, I do not like shooting a high ISO due to the noise, even though I have noise ninja.

Oh, just making a little fun. I know Nikons can produce just as nice of images as Canons; so long as the person behind the camera is doing a good job.

I kinda figured that you were kidding, but if a Canon did produce a better image without a flash well I'd have to think that over.

I do want to get a 1d and a 70-200 2.8 and compare that with my D2h
