Hey...
I have looked all over this site and at all the reviews and posts I could find..but I want to know if anyone has come across a shoulder/messenger bag that is tall enough to carry the 400mm? It is close to 12" tall....

I have a Nature Trekker AWII but I don't really like it because of its size. Plus you have to take the backpack off, set it on the ground and the put it back on when you need to change lenses. I want a shoulder bag so i can get quick access.

Thanks!

That lens might fit in a Lowepro Stealth Reporter 650 AW. I just measured mine and it's about 11" deep with a flexible cover that could allow the extra inch or so.

I carry three BIG zoom lenses (Canon L zooms), all with their hoods on - the hood on the 70-200 f/2.8L IS is reversed - along with a body mounted to any one of the lenses in my 650 AW.

Mounted to the camera or on its own? Will make a difference. If you want it to be mounted to the body, I'd suggest lying it on its side the length of the bag. The 400 f/5.6 will fit into a Domke F802, F-4AF or F-7 Double AF upright, without a camera attached. The F-1x and F-7AF will take the camera/lens combo (not the 400 f/2.8 though) on its side.

I have a messenger style domke 802 or 803 knockoff and the 400f5.6 fits.

I don't have a picture of the bag packed with the 400, but this does show you how the bag looks. I got it off of eBay and have been very happy with it.
