John are you using your 10D or picture phone for these pics? The quality looks super poor. Maybe it's your ISO

Hi Clint,

Glad to see your posting style is consistent - nothing like a bit of helpful encouragement for us amateurs. Always helps to keep a forum like this going.

ISO was 200, direct JEPG capture and the shots are pretty much as they came out of the camera.

I agree that the shots do seem a bit noisy, so you will no doubt be delighted that paying extra for the 20D was worth the money.

just hope you don't have any regrets in the future from your deleting efforts/attention to detail/space (or memory) saving techniques :)

not at all. I keep ones I like and delete the rest. no point keeping ones you don't like is there?

you must not have much knowledge when it comes to photography. they are clearly not taken with a phone camera. I suggest you read a bit more about cameras before posting as you make yourself to look like an idiot.

John its down to the pan being poor/and the light. had your shutter speed been a bit faster then they would not have been so noisey. I get it with my 20D too when I put the shutter speed down below what I normally get good shots with. more practice and you will see less and less of it. jpeg compression for the web won't help it either

Very fair point. I take into account camera shake and DOF when deciding what settings to use (and the amount of speed I am trying to create in panning shots ;) ) but haven't considered what will give me less noise. Also, I capture with jpeg because they are more convenient but, again, aren't giving myself the best option for a good image.

Valuable lessons learnt. Thanks for your comments.

Great motion shots, good job on panning. I think these are good shots, maybe not magazine, but I still would be proud if they were mine. I say hang these on the wall.

Ya done good.

Interesting. What shutter speed would be bad?

Anticipate , pick your shots, & you won't have that problem.

I suggest you read a bit more about cameras before posting as you make yourself to look like an idiot.

Not called for? Maybe he knows what John has available? Maybe he's being an idiot. Time will tell. Let's keep the opinions OT, or I'll have to lock the thread.

Thanks, but it's the more the result of being stubborn & not giving up after the first 3,000 shots? ;) This effect was caused by the focal-plane shutter moving across the film during the pan. I liked shooting blurs because they were somewhat unpredictable, but the slides on either side of this one were crap! :D

LOL, the focal plane shutter, I was doing an extended exposure of some fireworks and the kid in the forground decided to move, I wound up with an alien looking silloete streching infront of the fireworks.

I think the "quality issues" with pictures is due in part to bad resizing algorithms.. (especially noticeable on the picture of the Veyron, but in the first two as well)

As well, the first two pics could use a little more contrast.

..but that's just my amateur opinion.

I would agree, but John's shots are about 30KB, which is pretty small for a shot with that much info in them. I'm sure that they look better at the original size, and would look better at the forum limit (for attachments) of 100KB.

FYI: Photobucket will resize anything over 720 pixels. Some others do that too. In some cases automatic software is too "helpful", & people may not relize that if we don't point it out.
Issues like that & "the first two pics could use a little more contrast." are areas where a helpful comment & a link to info might lead a person to learn more about sizing or monitor calibration, etc. And sometimes it's easier to re-process a shot to show what we consider to be an "improvement" where the OP has enabled image editing. Even a small change in crop can make a big difference sometimes.
That's "improvement" in quotes, as we've all seen cases where the "improvement" looks like sh*t? :D

With over 80,000 members, everyone on a different part of the learning curve, & having different tastes & objectives, some helpful "help" & tolerance will go a long way toward keeping the forum an enjoyable experience & we'll all learn something in the process.

any shutter speed which you personally cannot get good pans with, its not A specific shutter speed.

I do pick my shots, however I take lots of them and it means more memory space if you take jpeg too.
