Things get cluttered with the 20D/85 combo (ISO 1600, 1/500 @f1.8 or so)

And not much better with the 5D/24-70L combo (ISO 3200, 1/320 @f2.8)

But...for alternative perspectives...

agreed, b+w is the best one. others seem a bit too cropped, and if they wheren't, i don't know how you managed to get that close without getting hit by a ball...can't expect too much out of highschool sports, even lower level college teams are pretty bad for photographing

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Oh, I don't know about that. I see some great action when I shoot high school basketball. As for being hit by the ball, that's just part of it. The players sometimes run into me, too. :)

I think your position probably was too close to use that lens. Try changing your position a bit and see if that helps. Don't give up, though. It takes time and practice to become proficient at shooting basketball.

agreed on the position, corners on either end of the court are usually nice if you have offensive teams because that's where it all happens (you know, layups, passing, brutal fouls)

the b&w pic- what you call taken from "alternative perspectives"- is the winner exactly because you took it from an alternative perspective. so look for more of those, next time.:)

btw: your c&c directive gave me a solid laugh, so i had to make it my new sig.

I like tight stuff. It's good to move along the baseline, to create variety. Get like a 35 or 50 in there for the wider stuff on the 5D.

And stick the 85 on the 5D, that would be a nice combo.

That B&W shot is great. I'm not opposed to the others, either. #2 & #3 have some good facial expressions, but you can't really see the "game," just that moment. #4 is not bad, either.

Lots of arms in #1.

Looking at the backgrounds and the action, I'm guessing you were right under the hoop?

I, too, thought the B+W was a great picture, but the earlier ones were also good. Each showed the players' physical exertion and concentration, which would be lost if the shot was wider.

Thank you one and all.

I did spend a large portion of my time in or near the lane. The percentage of shots with "something happening" was higher there - but it was generally too close.

Again, thanks for the encouragement and the critique.

That 5D looks awfully good at ISO 3200. I am thinking about biting that bullet. The bw is the winner. Were you seated/standing?
