This was shot with a 300D and 18-55 kit lens. This was my first attempt at a portrait so I would appreciate any comments or suggestions, whether they are processing or technique.

Nice shot, you can see how excited he is about Christmas - it's magical when they are that age.
It looks like you took it in portrait orientation with the shutter button down on your right, as the on-board flash has cast a shadow to his right. A speedlite, bounced off wall/ceiling, perhaps with a diffuser, would reduce that considerably. But it's a good picture of a photogenic child, I'm sure the first of many!
