Hi all,

This is my 1st post and I have what is probably a simple question but one I'd really appreciate any help with. I like to shoot a lot of sport and currently use a 400D with a 75-300mm f4 - 5.6 lens. Some of the sport i shoot is too far away for this and ideally I'd like to have a 500 or 600mm lens however for the time being this is out of my price range. Can anyone advise me whether or not it would be worth investing in a 2x tele converter? Obviously this would give me a focal length of 600mm but what would I be missing out on in comparison to the longer lens? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. :) :) :)

OK - I am pretty sure a Canon or Sigma teleconverter won't work with the 75-300mm lens.

Check out the sticky link here:

for details.

The one I was actually looking at was a Kenko- Tokina Tele-plus MC7 I noticed it is mentioned later on the Sticky thread, the one i am looking at is cheap and I'm assuming it will work with a 400D and the 75-300mm?

Well, this guy: >click here < didn't seem to have a problem with it and the 75-300

Be aware of possible image degradation, though. I find the 2x I use does degrade my pictures.

Ok, the one I have in mind is only $70 Australian (used) so much cheaper than the lens I want! I guess it may have to do until I can afford it?

I went down that path for a while - it works as long as you realise it is a compromise.

Where in OZ are you? Check out the link in my signature for a group of Aussies who will be happy to help you with 'stuff', too.

Maybe try one of the mirror lenses. They're not as good as the big guns obviously, but i've seen some good images posted from them. Centon make a dirt-cheap 500 and Sigma have had a 600 on the market for years.

With a 2X converter you will loose 2 stops of light, so you will get a 600mm f11 lens that will not autofocus. Dim viewfinder, manual focus and fast moving sports, good luck.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.
