Some of you guys think way too hard and look way too hard ;-)a As I say, it is a simple image. If it is bad, why do some like it? If it is good, why do so many dislike it? What makes the people who feel it is mediocre sit on the fence like that?

Because we didn't want to upset you Dave :-) - I still think you are taking the p*ss ;) :)

Agreed ... and in taking the piss there can be some sense that unravels ;-)a

Despite the 10 to 1 bad to good rating I still like the shot somehow that I can't explain 'logically' beyond the capture of an assumed emotion. All the peripheral stuff like focus, sharpness of background, jumble of boxes, half and half composition just have less importance. So, it kinda defeats all the standard measures often employed here and yet some do like it. Are they wrong?

Now if you'd taken it with a nice sharp (expensive) 'L' lens... ;) :)

I know what you mean, I have some shots that really should be 'binned' but for some reason I quite like them, they have a certain 'feel' or 'emotion' to them.

Some of my pics are really bad, but if I label them as 'abstract' or 'arty' they become more acceptable :-)

Bell curve? With 80,000+ members, no matter what you do, some will love it, someone will hate it, & some should go out & spend more time shooting & less time talking about it? ;)

Aye, that's it ... they suck but you still like 'em :D BUT I never said this shot was abstract or arty because it isn't. Maybe I secretly love her without knowing it myself :o :p

BUT, beyond all the technical issues, mainly related to the focus on boxes bottom right as you say, my sense is that there is some valuable emotional content there that pulls me in.

My gut reaction to the shot before reading any of the responses (and I still haven't read all of them) is that there was no emotional content at all. Clearly, the emotion of the scene affected you, but it didn't affect me, for whatever that's worth. I just may not be tuned to those channels.

There may be technique things to do, but none come to my mind that would wake the picture up--for me.

yeah bad.

Poor focus, no theme, cluttered, unidentified blurry thing in the fore ground, no balance.

Basically its got delete me written all over it.

Unless of course the photographer was a world famous photo journalist in which case it would probably be worth around $10,000.

I think that just about knocks it on the head ;-)a The OOF subject and in focus background kills it for me, despite everything else.

I thought it was good for a small camera phone. ;) Sorry, kidding aside, I thought it looked more like a pic taken by a private detective following someone.
