So what are the long-standing house rules?

If somebody posts pictures with a subject such as "Photos from my recent trip to the moon on the space shuttle" is it ok to critique or only post ooh's and aah's if they don't specifically request CC?

On the other hand, if someone posts pictures and doesn't want CC, should they expect that by posting they may get some any way?

Also, it seems potn forums have the same disease I have noticed on other forums - it's called "no-post-itis." When somebody posts a picture that is not really that good, often they fade into off into the temporal universe without a single comment. Why? Is this the way people should behave? Don't we all want to improve our art, and isn't that why we gather here in this house in the first place? Negative comments, when crafted constructively, help people improve.

I'm just sorta' wondering what proper decorum is around here. /Dan

The general gist around here is for supportive criticism, and for that matter, lots of ego boosting "nice photo" posts. At the same time though, there are a lot of posts appearing and it is quite possible for photos to disappear quite quickly off the front page, and unless someone is trawling lower pages and makes a comment, then such posts can disappear without comment.

The forums are very helpful, so definitely post to poor photos with constructive comments.

I'm not quite sure how that was intended - slightly sarcastic or sincere. Are you saying (in the sarcastic sense) that there seems to be an overabundance of that here, or are you saying (in the sincere sense) that that is the behavior that is expected - that no matter how good or bad it is, people should just pat each other on the fanny and go about their business?

Well yes, of course. We're not here to crush each other's egos, all should be productive. /Dan

Nope, no sarcasm was intended. I certainly appreciate feedback on my posts even if it is just "nice photo". I do know though that there are also people on these forums that discount such posts as not being of much worth. While I agree that a full constructive criticism certainly has more value, I do still appreciate that the person has taken enough of their time to make a comment in any case.

There are lots (and i mean LOTS) of new people here that generally give the impression that they don`t really care about real CC,all they care about is as you said....very nice.
Well,on the other side, and i`m talking about the ones who have been here for awhile (never mind me,i will not include myself here),when they see a new person with 2 or 3 post and they haven`t even bothered to stay here and learn from others first and also ask questions and comment on other`s posts,plus....take the time and be known...what they read is....OK,i`m here,i`m new, here is my post....(and most of the time that post is not even worth looking at).

Can you tell me why this post should get any CC when people have this kind of attetude ?

And now i`ll involve myself....when i first joined here,i spent (like others did) countless days and weeks, looking around, asking questions, commenting (even wrongly some times and corrected),and basicly made myself known within these circles.

It was alot later that i started posting some of my pictures for critique and bilieve me....by that time i had learned alot from all the other members here, who in turn were very keen to help me.
The difference is that those people could see that i was thirsty for photo knowledge.

Now....these days (and thats the main reasson i stoped CC to others and especially new members),when you try to say what you really think about someones post (which deep down is very helpfull),all you get is abuse and others joinning in trying to tell you how wrong and a bad person you are.

Another thing is...(minority at least) that some people here post pictures and they only reply to comments they receive, they never even bother to look at other peoples posts.
Well, personally for these people i don`t even open their threads any more.
I have 8.500 post and from them only less that 300 are mine, the rest are comments and trying to help people, well,i`m afraid that those days are gone.

And i`ll say one more thing....i definitely miss the good old days, when i learned alot from others and others learned some from me.

Personally I don't comment on posted pictures because I do not have the experienced eye to make a judement. If I like a picture I will give the "oooh and ahhhh" type comments tho.

1) If you like it, say so. And if you have the time, be specific about what you like.

2) If you don't like it, don't respond unless you can take the time to explain why you don't like it, politely and constructively. And rather than tell the OP what he did wrong, suggest what he might do differently next time for better results.

Some posts go without response because no one was willing to take the time required for #2, before it drops off the radar.

What Dmitri said...

And, the best way to get critique is by asking for it. If someone posts just to get positive comments then this is the wrong place to do it.

Also, the written medium is not the best way of conveying subjective criticism - too much can be "read" into what actually was "typed" depending on the mood of the reader. I've seen a few very innocent and factual comments that were blown out of the water 10X over because someone was reading into the comment.

At the end of the day, do unto others... should be the main rule. Treat others like you would like to be treated.

I'm very grateful for all posts on my submissions, good and bad! I do try to comment on as many as time will allow, and sometimes, like just recently, I haven't been able to participate as much as I'd like. I think we should be able to take criticism if we are going to post on this forum, and I also think criticism can be done in a nice way, without being harsh, rude, or hurtful. Always keep in mind that the written word can be interpreted in different ways by different people.

And what about if (as you said) you like it ?
Do you not have any questions to ask? for instance....if a tripod was used? or any filters ? what filters ? why did he/she try to keep the SS so slow? and i can go on and on and on.....

If we want to be CC`d then we have to CC others , its a 2 way game here.
I`m not trying to argue with you, just to show you the way i see things.:)

What Dmitri said...

And, the best way to get critique is by asking for it.

I totally agree, but of cours to get to that stage, you have to reply to others.
Now if someone tells me (as some have done before) that my pictures are too good to be CC`d...my reply is this....
What alot of cr** , lets say for argument sake they are , do you not have any questions that will lead to the fact that you`ll learn something out of it? questions of the nature ....how did i do it,what filter/speed/aperture and why ?
Why that time of day? why portrait orientation?
One thousand questions someone could ask about someone elses pictures but the point is..........are you interested ???
Probably not.

If someone posts just to get positive comments then this is the wrong place to do it.

How very true,i totally agree with this one.

Also, the written medium is not the best way of conveying subjective criticism - too much can be "read" into what actually was "typed" depending on the mood of the reader. I've seen a few very innocent and factual comments that were blown out of the water 10X over because someone was reading into the comment.

Again i agree, many times i have been missunderstood.

At the end of the day, do unto others... should be the main rule. Treat others like you would like to be treated.

Exactly my words, and i`ll give an example.
Not so long ago, someone had posted a picture, nothing special, and before you know it it was on page two.
The same person....bump....whats wrong with my pictures and noone replies to it.

Well,it took me a few seconds to find out that this was his 2nd post in the forum and his 1st one was another of his pictures.
I`m afraid that this is a comunity, things don`t work like that, you take care of me,i`ll take care of you.

I`m only trying to speak out what i believe is proper (in my oppinion of cours) and i know that alot of people will not like it for various reasons but at the end of the day...c`es la vie ,we don`t have to reply if we don`t want to , the way i se it this is a place to learn,if you want to,there are many ways to really do so.

Hey Al,don`t worry about that mate,:lol:,i`ll be around for awhile.

What i`m trying to say is this...when i first joined here,i was just another newby.
After i learned alot of things,i got to the stage as you know me today.
The reason i don`t post that much lately is (besides the fact that i get replies from people who really believe in me,and a huge thanks to them) because it has come to the point that all i get is admiration , ooh...aah...and the rest.

I would prefer if people (especially new ones) would start questioning my photography , what / how and why i do things the way i do them.
Thats how you learn, thats what i did,but of cours i really wanted to learn.
All this might sound arrogant (spell?) but i assure you that i`m not, these days it means more to me when i know that i`m helping others than the actuall fact of the commenting in my posts of ooh...aah...and so on.

Al,i`ve learned from things you do by observing your technique as others learn from mine, its a full circle, noone is perfect.

You speak sense dimitri, there is a bit of ooh'ing going on. I think it will be interesting to see how the book goes because we are going to have to be fairly brutal to get the right images selected! Some people might have a shock!

I have to say, I learn from you just by reading you put so much info in your posts ;)
