Hey, Dimitri - your posting skills need a bit of critique! :p You keep mixing up the bits of post that you are replying to with your replies. I can tell by those "/quote" tags left lying about. If you were as careless with your camera you get a lot fewer of those "Oooh! Aaah!" comments - that's for sure!

:lol:,i know Mike, far too many posts to catch up i`m afraid and of cours when you are in a hurry....:o

BTW I agree with (most) of what you say. I have also benefited greatly from these forums but I soon recognized that you must contribute feedback as well as receive it - that is my golden rule here.

As you know Mike,i strongly believe that myself.
Just a few minutes ago i was looking at someones post and just for curiocity i looked at his overall posts , he hasn`t replied to anyones posts but to his own ones , his total posts are....well , over 50.
Personally,i will never even bother to open any of his posts, never mind comment on them, and i don`t really care how good he is.
Its not only about photography , its about manners also.

but if a member just want positive comment then the share forums is definately the place for that.

This is why I made the original post and one of the forum decorums that boggle my mind! Why on earth would anybody post a picture in the hopes of receiving only accolades?

The fact they know, in the back of their mind, the compliments may not be sincere effectively eliminates or cancels the original intent of the post. I just don't understand why somebody would want to be intentionally deceived into thinking a shot is good that might not be... why they would not want to grow, improve, and expand their skill sets. /Dan

You are assuming members post "nice photo" even if they really think it sucks. I don't think that is the case. My guess is that 98% of the time the comments are sincere even when just saying "nice photo". Why else are there lots of threads that get no comment? If what you say were true no threads would have zero responses.

I second you, Tommy. For my fragile self-confidence, (also) these comments are pure gold.

My two-pennorth (for what it's worth),
I agree wholeheartedly with Dimitri's take on the subject.

There are a couple of situations that make me hesitate giving an honest critique, firstly this isn't a critique forum, so unless the author specifically asks for critique, I often don't, unless I either know the author, or I know the author won't take offence at an honest opinion.

Secondly, if the author is new/just starting out in photography, then I'm always aware that criticism without encouragement is not appropriate, so I try and mix them both, hoping I won't frighten them away from photography.

I agree entirely, that saying am image is excellent when there are obvious flaws does the author no favours.

What is refreshing about this forum is that there is a lack of bitchiness and tit for tat points scoring, and that authors tend to 'feed' of each other, consequently developing and maturing as photographers.
At the end of the day that's what it's all about.

And Dimitri's images are still a bag of s**te :) :) :)

Good points Les,

the friendly atmosphere here is well worth a few 'ohh' and 'ahh' posts if it encourages people to stay and develop and learn.... that's what got me where I am today (not sure that's a good thing or not lol)

Spot on Al.
I for one have had many a bashing of Les, Dimitri and one or two of our 'more accomplished' members here but I have taken all the comments offered by them onboard, analysed them and tried to incorporate any info. gleaned into my work and I know for a fact that my work has improved considerably from their advice - 'technicaly' that is - not everyone has the same opinion about 'content' ofcourse ( beauty is in the eye of the beholder!) but
you have to stick at it and take the knocks aswell as the praise and give encouragement whenever possible.
I haven't had the chance to comment or post myself for a while now as i'm so busy but still try to get the odd half hour now & again to come here.
It's a great Forum with lots of great Guys offering good advice.

Kind regards all. Alan.

Gee, I'm the only gal to contribute to this thread - it's really a man's world, eh? ;) I know you guys are tough critics, but that is why I post here. I want to learn. On betterphoto.com everyone just loves every photo and while it's a useful site to display, you are not going to learn much from the comments. I really appreciate you guys, and I hope you haven't been going easy on me because I'm a ...........girl!!! :D
