Kadman Member 79 posts Joined Oct 2006 More info | Dec 10, 2006 17:53 | #3 The biggest negative affect of the ball return isn't so much that it's in the frame, it's that it's catching most of the light from the flash, causing the true point of interest to be underexposed. This is a scenario where I would try to either recompose as previously suggested, or (my preference) go with no flash and a larger aperture (fast prime) to keep the shutter speed up.
