Already posted 1 of the pics from Sat (Here) however though that I would post a couple more.

Weather was appalling - these mostly came from the clear moments - the last photo showing just how bad the weather got!!

EXIF info is still intact for the technically minded amongst you.

Like Wednesday's "headers" post, this one is themed as well - with crunching tackles being the theme!! Some of the other photos are on my photoshelter (external link)

Thanks for looking - C&C, as ever, is welcome.

1. Amazingly, this wasn't given as a foul!

2. With a look like that on his face, this was only going to have one outcome.....a foul!

3. You definitely won't find this in the soccer coaching manual!

4. A rare moment for the opposition to get their own back!

5. This was shortly after the torrential rain storm stopped.......and the hail started!! It was also shortly after I realised that my fingers were so cold I couldn't feel the shutter button!!

You evidently have a lot more common sense than I do!! :)

If I'd stayed out there for much longer I have a feeling I would have developed webbed feet, a bill and had POTN members taking pictures of me with new cameras and lenses!!! :D

That two footer is going to hurt I think.

nice work in god awful conditions.

I think it takes a snapper to realise how hard this can get, especially with poor light!

I seem to recall a little bit of a yelp shortly after that picture was taken!

And thank you - the home made rain covers were thoroughly tested on Saturday and were about 99% ok! Feeling quite pleased with myself in a very smug way for my handiwork!

I agree - was the most challenging conditions that I have photographed in - the goalkeeper for the opposition spent most of the second half laughing at me for being out in such poor weather.....I'm glad I provided some entertainment!!:lol:

Having looked at enough pics on the web I am starting to be able to tell a 1d shot before I look at the exif.. the colours are just so amazing... far richer than my 1dmkII thats for sure..

Anyone at Forest v Salisbury tonight? I might be a bit lonely at the Salisbury end while everyone else is covering forest expecting goals galore...

Although I haven't had first hand experience of the Mk11 - I am starting to get the hang of the Mk1 (only taken 6 weeks!) and how to bring the best out of it. I'm finding the results staggering though, quite often in less than ideal shooting conditions.

Have a look at Marc Atkin's post on "playing with noise" he seems to be getting some very rich results from his Mk11....might be worth seeing what in camera setting he uses. I seem to recall that he answered my question about PP on that post too, which may help you along

I think you could be in for a quiet night!

Have Sigma got your 120-300 back to you as yet?

The last one is exceptionally good - the mk11 is considerably more accomplished than the mk1 at high ISO - however like you, so far, I have had few issues with it. Noise Ninja is definitely a useful tool though in those instances.

Bet you can't wait for the reach of the 120-300 - although that said, you're doing a fine job with the 70-200.

Going back to your earlier point about the richness of colours from your mk11, they look pretty good to me!! :D

Cheers:) I was quite pleased considering 3200.. also it prints out at a4 ok :)

But how much does yours go through photoshop? Mine alays need an auto something or other ..i do believe the 1d gets richer colours straight out the box?

but people do say processing is a part of digital photography so...

I have 2 different workflows........1 for the paper and 1 for the photos on my website.

The workflow for the paper is simple:
Auto levels. (Although I will run through Noise Ninja if I am shooting above ISO800 just to tidy them up). No cropping or resizing - it just gets saved at JPEG level 10 in PS. Apparently the Auto Levels is to ensure that the photos they receive from various people all have at least a consistent level of Level adjustment before going to print. Logical I suppose!

The paper does the cropping to fit their column sizes and does make life much easier for me. They also have an exceptional sharpening programme which really does make the pictures pop off the page! So in all am happy to let them do all this (as if I have a choice!):D

For the website......(and indeed, the photos that I posted above):
Noise Ninja (if needed);
Hue +5;
Crop;
USM (300, 0.4, 0)

As you can see its fairly minimal and takes less than a minute to complete on a picture.

To your point, I find that saturation needs no tweaking out of the 1D at all due to the strength of the colours.

Shooting on colour matrix 3 really brings things out as well and I've started to use this more and more - although sometimes it really does make the saturation a little overpowering - especially with anything red on an overcast day.

As for PP being a part of photography, yes, that is true I suppose. Am happy with the PP that I currently do, I am still of the school of thought that if things are correct at the point of taking the picture, then apart perhaps from the cropping, resizing and USM, there shouldn't be too much else to have to do.

Have a play around with settings (not very knowledgable on the Mk11 so not in a position to make recommendations am afraid) - maybe try changing the colour matrix to 3 and see what you think? (if you want to compare the same shot, shoot something in RAW, then using DPP convert to JPEG with Saturation set at 0 to replicate Matrix 1 and then Saturation at 3 to replicate Matrix 3)

Just re-read this and it resembles a series of thoughts, rather than any real structured advice - but hope it helps!!!
