i had an idea for a feature, and i am curious if it is available on any canon dslr.

i recently shot a wedding in which i was quickly moving between using ambient light and strobes. i dialed in the appropriate settings for each - i dont recall the actual settings but for instance - ambient @ iso400, 1/125, f/4 - stobe @ iso100, 1/200, f/8. despite being handy on the controls i found myself fumbling around a bit.

i thought it would be nice if each setting were able to be 'saved' and available for instant recall by button, wheel, etc, to quickly move between the two. i cant imagine this is a new idea, so i am wondering - does it exist?

Several of the G-series cameras had (have? Don't know if it's on the G7) this ability. My G3 came with two "custom" settings on the dial. You could set up almost any shooting situation, in any of the other dial modes, and save it to a custom preset. Turning the dial to C1 or C2 would then duplicate that setting: ISO, shooting mode, flash settings, exposure settings, and even zoom setting. What was really nice was that you could then modify things if needed, and it would behave like whatever mode you had saved. I have my C1 set for outdoor candids, and C2 set for indoor ones.

My guess is that not many people use the feature, since it's complicated to set up. It's certainly the case that it would be trivial to modify the firmware to support it, and the mode dial on my 30D has plenty of room for 4 or 5 custom settings if Canon had wanted to put the feature there.

All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?

The 5D does have one "Custom" setting available. The A series (at least my A80 and A620) have it also; I believe the 1 series do as well.

I usually only use M, but set Av to a different f-stop & Tv to a different shutter speed. Maybe a Cf function to map the Av-Tv settings to a different M setting could be made to work.
