Unresponsive CameraWindow

Hello...
I recently purchased a SD800 IS, which is my first Canon camera. While I'm loving it so far, I'm having some issues trying to transfer pics to my computer. I'm currently running XP Service Pack 2.

The problem that I'm having is that CameraWindow is completely unresponsive. If I select it with the prompt that I get when I plug in the camera, nothing happens. If I try to manually start the program, again nothing at all happens. ZoomBrowser seems to work just fine.

I've installed everything for the transfer process verbatim from the manual. In fact, I've already reinstalled twice thinking that may be the problem. I've followed the directions very closely to try to rule out a conscious error on my end, but keep getting the same (lack of) result. At this point, I'm at a complete loss.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Using an SD card reader is easier for me. I use this free program to select pics I want to keep and save them to my computer: http://www.softpedia.com …ols/cam2pc-Freeware.shtml (external link)

I don't use ZoomBrowser, but if you use a card reader, and you have XP/sp2, when you insert the card, I get a popup asking if I'd like to use (this program, that program, some other program, .. ... ...) but one of the choisces is the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard.

I use this religously and love it. It does several things in a way that I really like. 1) Once the wizard starts, you basically pick a "name" -- could be Christmas2006 for example. 2) It creates "Christmas2006" as a subfolder name under your chosen pics root (for me, it's simply the "My Pictures" folder... so this would be "my pictures\Christmas2006" in my case). 3) It numbers the pics for me, Christmas2006 001.jpg... in sequence. I don't particularly like "DSCF0043.JPG" as a filename. 4) It offers me to delete from the camera when I'm done (I usually say yes). 5) It offers me to publish the pics to a website once I'm done (I sometimes say yes... Gallery has a plugin that allows you to upload right from this point).

So, I'm a fan of this particular way. I hope this is useful to you.

Had gear, but sold it off. Starting back in with a SL1 / kit lens. Looking to expand the collection.

Look in the event viewer for any errors of services that cannot start. I had the same symptoms, the problems ended up being a missing CALMAIN.exe. I solved the issue by copying the file from another computer.

Possible solution found here http://www.stevesforums.com …=69951&forum_id=34&page=1 (external link):

1) Go to "Control panel"

2) "Administrative Tools"

3) "Services"

4) Check "Canon Camera Access Library 8" and check if it is started or not. Most likely not.

5) Go to properties (double click) "Canon Camera Access Library 8" and try to start it and switch the "startup type" to automatic. It might not start.

6) If it does not start, check if "SSDP Discovery Service" is on and "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" as well. Their both Startup types have to be automatic as well.

7) Start "Canon Camera Access Library" close everything and it should start working.

Thank you everyone for the replies. While I haven't had a lot of time to mess with things, some progress has been made.

I followed corosario's post. As it turns out my SSDP Disc Service was off. I changed that, but after following the directions I receive a message indicating that the Canon Camera Access could not be opened (specifically error 2: The system cannot find the file specified).

Which would lead me to think it's a problem similar to what Mike had posted. Unfortunately I don't know much about using the event viewer and haven't had time yet to learn about it, but that's definitely something I need to do soon.

I did try the Microsoft Camera and Scanner Wizard, which worked very well. I'd still like to see if I can get the Canon software working, but this is a great alternative that I probably wouldn't have tried before.

Interestingly enough, after transfering my files to the PC I found a new problem. Whenever I try to access the folder I downloaded the photos to (only 6 photos, 3 movies), Window's Data Execution Prevention shows up and shuts everything down. I'm a religious user of Spybot and Ad Aware, as well as Norton Antivirus, and have never seen this problem until my photos were loaded onto the computer. I'm wondering if it's more something to do with the movies at this point, but again I haven't had much of a chance to sit down and work on this one.

Thank you again for the help everyone. If there's any other suggestions (for either the Canon transfer or the DEP) it would, again, be very much appreciated.

update:

after deleting the movie files (but leaving the photos) I no longer get the Windows DEP message, and viewing seems to be just fine.

I have experienced similar problem and found that the Canon Camera Access Library will only start after SSDP has been started. Once you changed the status to Automatic, restart the service, then try starting Canon Camera Access Library. Its best if you restart WIA and SSDP before starting Canon Camera Access Library.
Try it out and keep us posted.

As far as I know, The EOS utility must be installed along with Zoombrowser. That allowes the camera to interface with Zoombrowser. It also allowes tethered shooting.

After spending an hour on the phone with Canon Tech Support, they determined that some unidentifiable program was preventing CameraWindow from opening. We tested Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard (which still works very well) and they told me to stick with that and periodically check the Canon website for software updates.

... and for whatever reason, Windows no longer thinks that my movie files are malicious and DEP is no longer in issue. I have no idea what happened to change that, but everything is working fine (as long as I don't use CameraWindow, of course).

Thank you again everyone for al the help and replies. This is a great little community that I'll be sure to continue checking into for anything regarding photography.

Thanks again!

Hooray!! My CameraWindow now works! Thank you. I hadn't thought of looking for Canon in Services

This is somewhat out of topic, but if you need the AC adapter just for a safe image transfer, perhaps a card reader is a better (and cheaper) solution. I have the AC adapter for my Pro1 ($86) and a SanDisk card reader ($24). The Pro 1 has a slow 1.1 USB connection and the card reader is about ten times faster. All the functionality with Windows and with Canon software (ZoomBrowser, Camera window etc.) works fine either way.
