i have been considering getting a Canon 200 f2.8 Prime for the new rugby league season that will soon be here. i have been struggling of late with handholding being disabled suffering with arthritis in my hands neck & shoulders i thought this compact looking lens might be of help. as i shoot mainly sport i wondered what the other sports photographers think about this.

Steve.

I really love this lens. It comes with a hood, but not the tripod collar (US$80), which is a drag. If you're shooting outside, you can use a monopod on your camera body, but it'll be front-heavy (but not too bad). It also takes my sigma 1.4x TC very well.

Personally, I suggest you consider the Sigma 100-300 f/4 - it's one of Sigma's best lenses and compares favorably to the long L zooms. It's a bit more expensive than the 200L, but also more versatile. It is a fabulous lens for outdoor sports. I pretty much use it exclusively for those purposes. Unlike the Canon, it comes with a tripod collar. It also takes the 1.4x TC very well - especially one stop down (virtually no edge fringing).

Steve,

I'd say that there would be too much overlap on the 70-200 sigma lens you have......and of course the 120-300. Looking at your gear list I am not too sure where this would fit in with your existing kit?

Were you thinking of selling an existing lens?

Paul

Oops. I just saw your sig (because of TP2000's comments). You don't need the 100-300!

Steve,

Think you would miss the versatility of the 70-200 - but then a 200mm prime wouldn't really give you anything that you don't already get with that lens. (sorry, I think I may have just stated the obvious there!)

Do you handhold the 120-300 or pop it on a monopod?

Paul
