No clue who makes those and it depends what yo consider to be "a fortune". Some people swear by Sandisk Ultra II. You can get 2GB for $40 on Amazon now.

I got a PQI 2GB for $40 before $20 rebate from Frys.com. That's cheap, but the card is supposed to be slow (even though it's labelled as Hi Speed 100). It's fast enough for my purposes on my XTI though.

Canon Rebel XTi (400D), Canon 70-200mm f/4L, Tamron f/2.8 28-75mm, Canon f/3.5-5.6 10-22mm, Canon f/1.8 50mm, S-M-C Takumar f/1.4 50mm, Nikon f/1.8 50mm E Series, 2xCanon 430EX, Canon 540EZ, Sunpak 5000AF, Minolta 4000AF, Velbon MAXi, Dynatran CF994

Stuart,
If you don't mind a few days wait, the cheap ones from 7dayshop are great, I have a couple of 1Gig (£9) and 2Gig (£17) from there and have had no problems whatsoever. Try link below.

I use the ones from 7 day shop, and have had no problems even at 8,5 frames per sec on the IIN, the card kept up OK.
