So, I had a 70-200 F4 I bought back in August. Great lens, but I needed something faster, so I decided to get the 2.8 non-is version and sold the F4 on ebay for $500. I bought the 2.8 from Amazon and it's great but given the extra weight, I really want the IS. So thanks to Amazon's great return policy I am shipping it back and have ordered the IS version.

Would love to know how the 2.8 compares to the f4, regardless of IS or not. I'm thinking of swapping mine too. What do you usually shoot?

I shoot some indoor sports and my kids who are 2 and 4. From 4 - 2.8 defiantly helps.

you can always keep your 70-200f4 for outdoors and get a fast prime like 85mm f1.8 or such.

the f4 version is a wonderful lens. I got the 2.8 version for the speed, but image quality is the same.

I just got the IS version 5 days ago and shot an indoor Xmas concert of my child. Very low light. I am glad I bought the 2.8 IS version. I was shooting at 1/15 and 1/30 with no problem at all. The light was horrendous. Very bad tungsten lighting. You did the right thing and you will not regret it.

My philosophy is NOW, get the IS if you can afford it, you can always turn it off, but you cant turn it on when you want it IF you dont have it...

I think Jojo reviews the F4 vs f2.8 versions here.
